International Classification:
A61F 504
US Classification:
606 87
Abstract:
A device for guiding an osteotomy to be performed on the proximal end of a humerus that has a proximal sawguide alignable on a selected surface of the proximal end of the humerus for defining a saw line thereon; a radial arm connecting the sawguide to a distal mechanism for stably aligning the sawguide, the distal alignment mechanism has a pair of opposing lateral and medial epicondyle arms pivotally engageable with the lateral and medial sides of the distal end of the humerus, the epicondyle arms being pivotally mounted in a distal cross arm, the distal end of the radial arm being slidably mounted in the cross arm for distal to proximal slidable movement therein; the proximal end of the radial arm being rotatably connected to the sawguide through a proximal guide bar; the radial arm being supported above the humerus by the proximal guide bar and the epicondyle arms.

Modular Humeral Prosthesis

US Patent:
4919670, Apr 24, 1990
Filed:
Feb 3, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/151896
Inventors:
James L. Dale - Austin TX
Brain D. Burkinshaw - Pflugerville TX
Wayne Z. Burkhead - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Intermedics Orthopedics, Inc. - Austin TX
International Classification:
A61F 240
US Classification:
623 19
Abstract:
A modular humeral prosthetic device comprising a humeral stem having a substantially cylindrical distal end for insertion within the medullary canal of a resected human humerus; the stem transforming proximally from the distal end into a widened proximal end being tapered from anterior to posterior aspect; the proximal end having a proximal end surface which is angled relative to the axis of the distal end; a collar extending from the proximal end surface for preventing the stem from subsiding within the medullary canal; a tapered cylindrical mounting lock mechanism disposed on the proximal end surface, the axis of the tapered cylinder being substantially coincident with the central axis of the proximal end surface; a head mechanism having a substantially spherically shaped outer surface for engagement within the glenoid cavity of a human scapula, the outer spherical surface of the head mechanism being less than half the surface of a complete sphere; the head mechanism including a complementary tapered aperture for reversibly receiving the cylindrical lock mechanism in a rigid mechanical coupling engagement; the theoretical center of the spherically shaped head mechanism being disposed at or below the collar.

Glenoid Prosthesis And Method Of Use

US Patent:
5080673, Jan 14, 1992
Filed:
Oct 15, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/597963
Inventors:
Wayne Z. Burkhead - Dallas TX
James L. Dale - Austin TX
Brian D. Burkinshaw - Pflugerville TX
Assignee:
Intermedics Orthopedics, Inc. - Austin TX
International Classification:
A61F 0000
US Classification:
623 19
Abstract:
A glenoid prosthesis and method for affixing the same to a resected portion of a glenoid cavity on the head of the scapula. Th glenoid prosthesis has a lateral surface for articulating with the humeral head and a flat medial surface which engages a flat surface resected from the glenoid cavity. In a first embodiment, a pair of pegs extend medially from the flat medial surface of the glenoid prosthesis which are positioned in a pair of holes and the mating flat surfaces and pegs and holes are bonded with cement. The flat mating surfaces resist rocking under applied superior-inferior loading. Resection of the bone is simplified by providing a flat resected surface and holes drilled substantially perpendicular thereto. Preferably, grooves are provided in the pegs to provide an increased area for bonding, and preferably the grooves are graduated in depth to provide greater strength at the proximal end of the pegs where the highest stresses occur. In a second embodiment, the glenoid component consists of a metal base and plastic insert, wherein snap-fit locking means are provided for attaching the insert to the base and a central boss and screw fixation of the base to the bone provides stability and allows reconstruction with bone grafts.

Glenoid Implants Having Adjustable Base Plates

US Patent:
2014002, Jan 23, 2014
Filed:
Jul 23, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/949032
Inventors:
- Macroom, IE
John FENLIN - Bryn Mawr PA, US
Gregory P. NICHOLSON - Western Springs IL, US
Wayne BURKHEAD - Dallas TX, US
International Classification:
A61F 2/40
US Classification:
623 1913
Abstract:
A glenoid implant for a shoulder prosthesis is adapted to be implanted in the glenoid of a patient. The glenoid implant includes an articular body for articulating the glenoidal implant with a humeral component. A plate supports the articular body. An anchoring mechanism for anchoring the glenoid implant along an anchoring axis is adapted to be secured to the glenoid. A securing mechanism secures the plate in position relative to the anchoring mechanism and the glenoid. An adjustment mechanism facilitates selectively adjusting the position of the plate, before it is secured in position by the securing mechanism, in rotation about the anchoring axis and in translation transversely relative to the anchoring axis.
