US Classification:
370401, 370466
Abstract:
A customer premises border element is disclosed that functions as an interface between devices, such as SIP devices located on a customer's premises, and a border element located in the service provider's network. Such customer premises border elements are advantageous in that they are relatively inexpensive since they only have to support devices located on the customer's premises. At the same time, by performing a number of functions, such as media transcoding and a portion of call processing, it reduces the processing requirements of network border elements.

Method And System For Employing Underutilized Communication Channels As Outbound Gateways

US Patent:
8155111, Apr 10, 2012
Filed:
Apr 8, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/082023
Inventors:
Yihsiu Chen - Middletown NJ, US
Mark Jeffrey Foladare - East Brunswick NJ, US
Samuel Glazer - New York NY, US
Shelley Betty Goldman - East Brunswick NJ, US
Thaddeus Julius Kowalski - Summit NJ, US
Assignee:
AT&T Intellectual Property II, L.P. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
H04L 12/64
US Classification:
370356
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method and system for employing underutilized communication channels as outbound gateways. A call from a calling terminal to a called terminal is routed to a first residential gateway at a first customer premises via a broadband data network and then routed from the first residential gateway to the called terminal via a local area network. The call is thereafter re-routed to a second residential gateway at a second customer premises via the broadband network and then routed from the second residential gateway to the called terminal via the local area network. The re-routing of the call via the second residential gateway may be in response to a determination that the first customer premises requires bandwidth (of either the broadband network or local area network) or other resources that are being used by the telephone call being routed via the first residential gateway. The call is thus re-routed via the second residential gateway in order to free up the resources needed by the first customer premises.

Abstract:
An access architecture for real-time communications is described. The architecture includes an inter-architecture network utilizing a single protocol, a plurality of border elements in communication with the inter-architecture network and with an external network, and one or more call control elements in communication with said inter-architecture network. The external network utilizes any of a variety of known networking technologies and protocols. The inter-architecture network utilizes a single protocol such as SIP. The present architecture provides a single common infrastructure for offering real-time communications services independent of call control protocols and networking technologies.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for managing load in a communication network are provided. At a processor of a relay device, a number of messages is determined that are one or more of currently queued for relay via a communication interface of the relay device and previously relayed within a given time period, the communication interface and the processor of the relay device for relaying the messages, via the communication interface, between a plurality of devices and a network infrastructure. At the processor, a rate at which the plurality of devices establishes communications with the network infrastructure is controlled, wherein there is an inverse relationship between the rate and the number of messages.
