Apparatus For Charging Toner Particles

US Patent:
4743937, May 10, 1988
Filed:
Dec 12, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/560691
Inventors:
Robert G. Martin - Rochester NY
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G03G 1500, G03G 1508
US Classification:
355 3DD
Abstract:
This invention is generally directed to an apparatus for charging toner particles comprised in operative relationship of a means for charging insulating toner particles and a means for transporting insulating toner particles, said means for charging and said means for transporting being charged to a predetermined potential, which apparatus further includes therein a brush device for delivering toner particles to a charging nip situated between the means for charging the toner particles and the means for transporting the toner particles. The brush device can also function as a charging source for the toner particles, and as a cleaning system. More specifically in one embodiment the present invention is directed to an apparatus for simultaneously metering, charging and transporting non-magnetic insulating toner particles comprising in operative relationship a metering roll means, an optional trim blade means for said metering roll means, a toner supply reservoir means containing therein weakly charged insulating toner particles possessing about an equal number of positive and negative charges thereon, a transporting hard roll or donor belt means, a triboelectrically active coating contained on said transporting means, a drive roll means, an idler means, a tensioning means, an imaging means, a voltage source means for the metering roll means, a voltage source means for the drive roll means, and the transporting means, said metering roll means moving in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the transporting means, and wherein the apparatus further includes a moving brush means contained in the toner supply reservoir which brush means contains bristles thereon, wherein the brush transports toner particles to a charging nip situated between the metering roll means and the transporting means.

Low Bead Impulse Donor Loading

US Patent:
5337124, Aug 9, 1994
Filed:
Sep 28, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/952082
Inventors:
Fred W. Schmidlin - Pittsford NY
Robert G. Martin - Irondequoit NY
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G03G 1506
US Classification:
355259
Abstract:
A toner delivery method and apparatus for delivering highly charged toner containing a minimum of wrong sign toner to a donor roll structure. The donor roll structure, in turn, delivers the toner to an image receiver or a DEP printhead structure. A magnetic brush is utilized for loading toner particles on the donor roll structure. A magnetic cleaning brush is provided for redistributing unused toner on the donor roll structure. The donor roll and magnetic brushes are positioned to form a cavity which is filled with developer material which prevents the formation of carrier bead chains.

Conformable Fusing System

US Patent:
5012072, Apr 30, 1991
Filed:
May 14, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/522934
Inventors:
Robert G. Martin - Irondequoit NY
Alan M. Litman - Webster NY
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G03G 1520
US Classification:
219469
Abstract:
A fusing apparatus including a heater roll disposed transverse the direction of movement of the support material, the heater roll being stiff in the longitudinal direction and conforming in the hoop direction, a core supporting the heater roll, the heater roll being disposed about the circumference of the core, the core being conforming in the hoop direction, and a back up role disposed transverse the direction of movement of the support material, the back up role being stiff in the longitudinal direction and conforming in the hoop direction, the engagement of the heater role and the back up role defining an elongated, essentially flat nip.

Belt Donor For Direct Electrostatic Printing

US Patent:
5040004, Aug 13, 1991
Filed:
Dec 18, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/452016
Inventors:
Fred W. Schmidlin - Pittsford NY
Robert G. Martin - Rochester NY
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G01D 1506, G03G 1506
US Classification:
346159
Abstract:
Direct electrostatic printing apparatus including structure for delivering developer/toner particles to a printhead forming an integral part of the printing device. The developer/toner delivery system insures even distribution to an apertured printhead structure. To this end, toner is deposited on a donor belt using a magnetic brush structure. The belt is entrained about a drive roller and an idler roller as well as a stationary mandrel. The mandrel is positioned opposite the printhead structure with a portion of the belt disposed intermediate thereof. The mandrel is provide with a flat area which is coplanar with the printhead structure. The flat area is coextensive with the space occupied a plurality rows of apertures in the printhead to thereby provide a uniform spacing between each row of apertures and the toner delivery belt.

Cyclonic Toner Charging Donor

US Patent:
5097277, Mar 17, 1992
Filed:
Jul 2, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/548459
Inventors:
Fred W. Schmidlin - Pittsford NY
Robert G. Martin - Rochester NY
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G01D 1506, G03G 1508
US Classification:
346155
Abstract:
Direct Electrostatic Printer including a combination toner charging and delivery system. The combination toner charging and delivery system serves to convey well charged toner to an area adjacent an apertured printhead through which toner particles are propelled in image configuration. The system is provided with an annular channel in a generally cylindrical member through which toner laden air moves under pressure. During movement uncharged toner particles collide with a triboactive surface of the channel due to centrifugal force and become charged. The other surface delineating the channel carries a bias electrode thereon. The electrostatic field created by the bias prevents toner from colliding with the triboactive surface once it has reached a predetermined charge/mass ratio.

Instant-On Fuser

US Patent:
4724303, Feb 9, 1988
Filed:
Aug 6, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/893753
Inventors:
Robert G. Martin - Rochester NY
Steven B. Bolte - Rochester NY
Richard F. Koehler - Webster NY
Assignee:
Xerox Corporation - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G03G 1520
US Classification:
219216
Abstract:
The present invention is concerned with an instant-on fuser having a cylindrical, relatively thin metal cylinder supporting a resistance heating foil or printed circuit secured on the inside surface of the cylinder by a high temperature adhesive. The interior of the cylindrical tube is filled with air. The heating foil or printed circuit is carried on a fiber glass substrate and the heating elements is connected to electrical leads extending through caps on the ends of the cylindrical support. The relatively low thickness, low mass fuser and high temperature materials permit a relatively fast instant-on fuser.
