A switched power rail fault is communicated to a power manager to take corrective action, such as cutting off power to information handling system components. In one embodiment, a pair of bipolar junction transistors monitor the voltage differential to send an enable signal if the differential is within limits and a disable signal if the differential exceeds limits.

Method And Tool For Computer Bus Fault Isolation And Recovery Design Verification

US Patent:
6182248, Jan 30, 2001
Filed:
Apr 7, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/056591
Inventors:
Cynthia Joan Armstrong - Austin TX
Scott Leonard Daniels - Cedar Park TX
Alongkorn Kitamorn - Austin TX
Brian Anthony Oehlke - Leander TX
Richard Martin Tonry - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H02H 305
US Classification:
714 43
Abstract:
An error injection tool, connected to a bus to be tested in such a manner as not to interfere with normal operation, is employed for error detection and recovery design verification. The error injection tool is connected to the bus to be tested within a data processing system, the system is powered on, and applications simulating normal system loading are run. A desired error is then selected, and the error injection tool is actuated. The error injection tool monitors bus cycles and transactions through selected signals and, upon detecting an appropriate cycle or transaction, overdrives a selected conductor within the bus being tested to inject an error. The selected bus conductor is overdriven (forced) to a logic high or a logic low for a single clock cycle, simulating the intermittent nature of errors likely to occur during normal operation. Bus error signals are then monitored to ascertain whether the error was successfully injected. If not, subsequent attempts during appropriate bus cycles or transaction may continue until error injection is successful.

System And Method For Power Application To An Information Handling System

US Patent:
7378755, May 27, 2008
Filed:
Mar 31, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/096132
Inventors:
Patrick Desbois - Austin TX, US
Mohammed K. Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Richard M. Tonry - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
H02J 1/00
US Classification:
307 38
Abstract:
An information handling system AC-to-DC adapter provides a low DC power output on initial application of an AC power input. The low DC power output supports communication between the adapter and the information handling system of adapter identification information. The information handling system confirms a proper connection with the adapter and sends an authorization to the adapter to output a high DC power output. The adapter monitors the connection with the information handling system to disable the high DC power output if not needed, such as if the information handling system is disconnected from the adapter or reaches a fully charged battery state.
