All joints are subject to painful conditions and episodes. This includes large joints, such as hips, knees, shoulders, and small joints, such as hands feet and spine. The interesting part of an orthopedic surgeon’s job is piecing together all of the different factors that contribute to joint pain. Joint problems are rarely one-dimensional. Many factors contribute to the reasons for joint pain. This article will address two concepts fundamental to understanding joint pain. In general, joint pain is the result of: 1) A structural derangement of some sort, and 2) A muscular dysfunction or imbalance which interacts with the structural problem.
