Engine Utilizing A Plurality Of Control Valves, And A Related Method Thereof

US Patent:
2013028, Oct 31, 2013
Filed:
Apr 27, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/457592
Inventors:
Roy James Primus - Niskayuna NY, US
Luke Michael Henry - Erie PA, US
Paul Gerard Nistler - Erie PA, US
James Robert Mischler - Girard PA, US
John Stephen Roth - Erie PA, US
Assignee:
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY - SCHENECTADY NY
International Classification:
F01N 3/00, F02M 25/07
US Classification:
60274, 60272
Abstract:
In accordance with the embodiments of the present invention, an engine is disclosed. The engine includes at least one donor cylinder and at least one non-donor cylinder coupled to an intake manifold feeding intake air and an exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold is configured to carry an engine exhaust emission from the donor cylinder and the non-donor cylinder. The engine also includes an exhaust gas recirculation manifold extending from the donor cylinder to the intake manifold for recirculating a donor cylinder exhaust emission from the donor cylinder to the donor, and non-donor cylinders via the intake manifold. The engine further includes an after-treatment system and a sensor configured to sense a temperature of the engine exhaust emission and a device configured to receive a sensing signal from the sensor and to control a parameter of the engine and a component of the engine in response to the sensing signal.

System And Method For Determining Compression Device Degradation

US Patent:
2012008, Apr 12, 2012
Filed:
Oct 12, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/902183
Inventors:
Paul Gerard NISTLER - Erie PA, US
James Robert Mischler - Erie PA, US
Luke Henry - Erie PA, US
William Gray - Grove City PA, US
International Classification:
F02D 28/00
US Classification:
701102
Abstract:
Systems and methods for determining compression device degradation of an engine of a rail vehicle are provided. In one embodiment, a rail vehicle system includes an engine, an air-intake passage coupled to the engine, a compression device including a compressor positioned along the air-intake passage, a barometric air pressure sensor for measuring a barometric air pressure upstream of the compressor, a manifold air pressure sensor for measuring a manifold air pressure downstream of the compressor, and a controller configured to adjust a rail vehicle operating parameter responsive to a determination of compression device degradation based on a negative pressure differential between the manifold air pressure and the barometric air pressure during a designated operating condition.

Method And System For A Common Rail Fuel System

US Patent:
2012008, Apr 5, 2012
Filed:
Oct 1, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/896377
Inventors:
Paul Gerard Nistler - Erie PA, US
Shawn Gallagher - Erie PA, US
Neil Blythe - Eire PA, US
Luke Henry - Erie PA, US
International Classification:
F02M 63/02, F02D 41/38, F02M 37/04
US Classification:
123456, 123457
Abstract:
In one embodiment, a common rail fuel system for an engine of a vehicle, such as a locomotive, comprises a higher-pressure fuel sub-system and a lower-pressure fuel sub-system, wherein a pressure limiting valve, is in fluid communication with to the higher-pressure fuel sub-system to relieve excess pressure. In a condition where pressure of the higher-pressure fuel sub-system is below a desired and expected threshold, it is possible that the pressure limiting valve is open. An example method is provided to close the pressure limiting valve and determine if opening of the pressure limiting valve is the cause of the pressure being below the threshold or if a leak is present in the common rail fuel system. In this manner, unnecessary disabling of the engine is avoided and, if a leak is present, the leaking sub-system is identified.
