A system for the control and synchronization of magnetic tape and filmstrip in an audio-visual projector. Film is advanced by means of recorded advance tones on the magnetic tape which are detected by a tone detector to generate an advance pulse. An advance counter is incremented responsive to each advance pulse and decremented as the film advances each frame. The output of the advance counter actuates a film-advance mechanism unless the contents of the counter are zero, so that synchronization is maintained even if the rate at which the advance pulses occur exceeds the operating speed of the film-advance mechanism. Means are provided to automatically synchronize the tape and film at predetermined locations by optically sensing markers affixed to the tape and film. The system may also advance the tape independently of the film in either a fast-forward or a regular-speed mode or it may advance the film independently of the tape.

An apparatus and method for smoothing the reproduction of digitized waveforms on a raster scan line display by providing control signals which increase and decrease the electron beam pattern along the scan line in a trapezoidal pattern which is representative of the amplitude of the sampled waveform along that scan line. A microprocessor provides a plurality of digital signals which define the slopes of the increasing and decreasing ramps of the trapazoids and their starting points along the scan line. The digital signals for an entire frame of scan lines are stored during the frame blanking interval of the display and are accessed for each scan line during the scan line blanking interval. The digital signals are stored in a random access memory (RAM) at raster scan line addresses provided by the processor through a scroll counter and at digital signal addresses provided through a display controller. During scan line blanking intervals the scroll counter incrementally steps through raster scan line addresses starting with the last address provided by the processor during the storing of the data.

Film advance is synchronized with the sound reproduction by means of recorded signals on the magnetic tape which unambiguously specify the filmstrip frame number appropriate to the magnetic tape sound program. Means are provided to allow the operator to rapidly access a particular filmstrip frame by specifying its number. When a sound program is included, the invention assures automatic synchronization of the sound program with the filmstrip frame.
