Philosophy:
My practice focuses on the general gynecologic care of cancer patients as well as women who are at high risk for gyencologic cancers due to their personal or family histories. I developed a program for cancer survivors that addresses their acute gynecologic needs as well as the survivorship issues that can surface after a diagnosis of cancer and its treatment. This includes managing menopausal symptoms, addressing hereditary risk, referring for screening evaluations, and promoting sexual health during and after treatment. My clinical practice is multifaceted. I provide general gynecologic care to cancer patients at MSKCC, whether they are in the midst of therapy or have already completed their treatment. My expertise also involves management of the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats, and the increased risk of osteoporosis that can occur after menopause or that is due to cancer treatment. I care for both young women who are experiencing early-onset menopause related to cancer therapy and older women who have reached the menopause naturally but whose choices for managing menopausal symptoms are limited because of their cancer histories. For example, hormone replacement therapy that involves taking estrogen may not be the best option for some women who have been treated for breast cancer. Also, many women have concerns and questions about the various treatments for managing menopausal symptoms. I discuss all treatment options with my patients, including the pros and cons of each, before establishing an individualized treatment plan. With so many advances and treatment options available today, menopausal symptoms can usually be managed very effectively. For women at high risk for breast or ovarian cancer who have opted for preventive surgery to remove their ovaries, discussing the various options for managing menopausal symptoms enables a treatment plan to be developed before surgery. My research interests include investigating ways to maximize the quality of life of menopausal patients who have been treated for breast cancer.
