Method For Contemporaneous Application Of Laser Energy And Localized Pharmacologic Therapy

US Patent:
5817144, Oct 6, 1998
Filed:
Oct 10, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/728618
Inventors:
Kenton W. Gregory - Portland OR
Assignee:
Latis, Inc. - West Conshohocken PA
International Classification:
A61B 500
US Classification:
607 89
Abstract:
A method for contemporaneously applying laser energy and locally delivering pharmacologic therapy to a selected site in a body lumen using a liquid core or fiber optic laser catheter or angioscope. The method comprises preparing a solution of a pharmacologic agent, inserting the catheter into the lumen, directing the catheter to the site, transmitting visible light to the site, flowing the light transmissive liquid through the catheter to the site to be treated, positioning an emission end of the fiber near (. +-. 2 mm) the distal end of the catheter, transmitting laser energy through the fiber to be emitted at the emission end of the fiber into the liquid to treat the site, and introducing a flow of the pharmacologic agent in solution into the catheter for contemporaneous discharge at the distal end into the lumen adjacent the site.

Fluid Core Laser Angioscope

US Patent:
5573531, Nov 12, 1996
Filed:
Jun 20, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/262926
Inventors:
Kenton W. Gregory - Portland OR
International Classification:
A61B 1736
US Classification:
606 14
Abstract:
A liquid core laser optical scope for illuminating, viewing, and delivering laser energy to a site in a lumen of an animal or human body which includes a flexible tube for insertion into the lumen, a conduit housed within the tube, a fluid source for coupling a flow of light transmissive liquid into the conduit, a light source for transmitting visible light through the tube to illuminate the site, an optical fiber bundle having an optical receiving end disposed at the distal end of the optical scope for imaging the illuminated site and transmitting a visible image thereof through the optical scope to an external viewing port, and a fluid core light guide for transmitting laser energy from an energy source into the conduit where the conduit has a sidewall capable of internally reflecting light into the liquid in the conduit so that the liquid waveguides the laser energy through the conduit to the site. The fluid core light guide serves not only to couple laser energy to the site in the lumen but to transmit illumination light to the site and reflected images back to the viewing port.

Wound Dressing And Method For Controlling Severe, Life-Threatening Bleeding

US Patent:
2008021, Sep 4, 2008
Filed:
Apr 18, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/148320
Inventors:
Simon J. McCarthy - Portland OR, US
Kenton W. Gregory - Portland OR, US
William P. Wiesmann - Washington DC, US
Todd D. Campbell - Petaluma CA, US
International Classification:
A61K 31/715, A61L 15/00
US Classification:
424445, 514 55
Abstract:
This invention is directed to advanced hemorrhage control wound dressings, and methods of using and producing same. The subject wound dressing is constructed from a non-mammalian material for control of severe 5 bleeding. The wound dressing for controlling severe bleeding is formed of a biomaterial comprising chitosan, a hydrophilic polymer, a polyacrylic polymer or a combination thereof, The kind of severe, life-threatening bleeding contemplated by this invention is typically of the type not capable of being stanched when a conventional gauze wound dressing is applied with conventional 10 pressure to the subject wound. The wound dressing being capable of substantially stanching the flow of the severe life-threatening bleeding from the wound by adhering to the wound site, to seal the wound, to accelerate blood clot formation at the wound site, to reinforce clot formation at the wound site and prevent bleed out from the wound site, and to substantially prohibit the flow of 15 blood out of the wound site.
