Engine Power Assembly

US Patent:
2006008, Apr 27, 2006
Filed:
Oct 25, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/973811
Inventors:
Paul Flynn - Fairview PA, US
Jeffrey Lebegue - Simpsonville SC, US
John Dowell - Grove City PA, US
Barry Record - Grove City PA, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F02F 1/16
US Classification:
123041840
Abstract:
A locomotive diesel engine, having a cylinder liner and a separate water jacket surrounding the cylinder liner, with a portion of the water jacket being positioned between the cylinder liner and the engine frame, where the cylinder liner is supported by the water jacket. An external shoulder on the cylinder liner can be supported by an internal flange in the water jacket, thereby eliminating direct contact between the cylinder liner and the engine frame. A coolant passage can be provided between the water jacket and the cylinder liner, at a point adjacent the topmost position of the top piston ring. An upper liner seal can be provided between the cylinder liner and the water jacket, above the coolant passage, and a lower liner seal can be provided between the cylinder liner and the engine frame, below the coolant passage. Coolant ports can be provided for coolant flow directly between the cylinder head and the water jacket, with seals in the coolant ports to seal the coolant, independently of the head gasket.

Filed:
Apr 15, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/863258
Inventors:
John Dowell - Grove City PA, US
Frederick Thwaites - Erie PA, US
Jonathan Nagurney - Erie PA, US
International Classification:
B63H 21/21
US Classification:
701 21
Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for operating a vehicle including an engine comprising a turbocharger including a compressor and a turbine. The engine further includes a bypass path configured to selectively route gas from downstream of the compressor to upstream of the turbine. In one embodiment, the method comprises selectively increasing gas flow to the engine by adjusting gas flow through the bypass path from downstream of the compressor to upstream of the turbine. In this manner, the performance of the engine may be adjusted for various operating conditions.

Adaptive Fuel Control For An Internal Combustion Engine

US Patent:
6848426, Feb 1, 2005
Filed:
Jun 20, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/600080
Inventors:
Ajith Kuttannair Kumar - Erie PA, US
John P. Dowell - Grove City PA, US
Bret Dwayne Worden - Union City PA, US
Gerald Edward Lacy - Erie PA, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
F02M 5920, F02D 4130
US Classification:
123480, 123198, 123357, 701104
Abstract:
An adaptive fuel limit function () for protecting an internal combustion engine. The adaptive fuel limit function is a learning function responsive to trends in an engine performance parameter such as compensated fuel consumption per unit of power produced (). The engine performance parameter is processed through a low pass filter () to allow changes in a fuel limit signal () in response to gradual changes in the fuel demand, such as may be due to wear in the engine, while blocking changes in the fuel limit signal in response to sudden changes in the fuel demand, such as may be due to a cylinder failure. The difference between the input and the output of the low pass filter may be processed to identify a failure level () for providing an alarm function distinct from the learning function.
