Apparatus And Method For Controlling An Electric Motor Having An Armature And A Series-Wound, Series-Connected Field Coil That Can Be Separately Controlled During Regenerative Braking

US Patent:
5789896, Aug 4, 1998
Filed:
Jan 3, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/779856
Inventors:
George A. Fischer - Grove City PA
Dennis A. Jarc - Chardon OH
International Classification:
H02P 318
US Classification:
318759
Abstract:
A circuit for controlling a motor having an armature and a series-wound, series-connected field coil that can be separately controlled during regenerative braking. The circuit includes a main switching circuit, an armature circuit, and a field circuit. The main switching circuit includes a first switch and a first diode parallel-connected to the first switch. The armature circuit includes a second switch parallel-connected to the armature and series-connected to the main switching circuit, and includes a second diode parallel-connected to the second switch. The field circuit includes a third diode parallel-connected to the field coil and series-connected to the armature circuit.

Method And Apparatus To Determine The Location And Resistance Of An Electrical Leak Within A Battery Without Measuring Individual Battery Cells

US Patent:
5811976, Sep 22, 1998
Filed:
Jan 3, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/778896
Inventors:
George A. Fischer - Grove City PA
Assignee:
Joy MM Delaware, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
G01N 27416, G08B 2100
US Classification:
324434
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for determining a location and resistance of an electrical leak in a battery having a first and second terminals. The apparatus includes a resistor, a switch assembly for selectively connecting the resistor to the first terminal of the battery and for selectively connecting the resistor to the second terminal of the battery, and a controller. When the apparatus determine the location of the leak, the controller is responsive to a first signal indicative of a voltage across the resistor, responsive to a second signal indicative of a feature of the battery, and calculates a quotient formed from first and second values and indicative of the location of the leak, the first value including a product of the first signal when the resistor is connected to the first terminal of the battery and the second signal, and the second value including a sum of the first signal when the resistor is connected to the first terminal of the battery and the first signal when the resistor is connected to the second terminal of the battery.

Articulated Vehicle

US Patent:
5873431, Feb 23, 1999
Filed:
May 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/642571
Inventors:
Daniel N. Butler - Franklin PA
George A. Fischer - Grove City PA
Randall W. Welker - Grove City PA
Assignee:
Joy MM Delaware, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
B62D 1100
US Classification:
180418
Abstract:
An articulated vehicle comprising a first vehicle portion attached to a second vehicle portion by a joint assembly. The joint assembly preferably comprises a bearing assembly that is pivotally attached to the first vehicle portion such that the bearing assembly can pivot relative to the first vehicle portion about a substantially horizontal axis that is substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The bearing assembly is also preferably pivotally attached to the second vehicle portion such that the bearing assembly can pivot relative to the second vehicle portion about a substantially vertical axis. The bearing assembly is preferably constructed to enable the first vehicle portion to rotate about the longitudinal axis relative to the second vehicle portion.
