A mini hot strip mill comprises three close coupled mill stands including a first and second four high finishing mill and a two high roughing mill positioned therebetween. A first coiler furnace is positioned upstream and a second coiler furnace is positioned downstream of the mill. The mills may each be retained in their own mill housings or the finishing mills may be in separate housings and the roughing mill may be retained in supports connecting the finishing mill housings. The mills are closely spaced so that the finishing mills are maintained open while operating in a roughing mode so as to allow free passage of the slab being reduced and the roughing mill is maintained open while the two four high mills are operative in a finishing mode. Two motors connected through a gear box to said mill provide for independently driving the finishing mills in speed coordinated relationship and for jointly driving the roughing mill.

A valve body includes a chamber for the flow of fluid between an inlet and an outlet thereto. The chamber includes an upper portion with an opening therethrough and a lower portion including a valve seat between the inlet and outlet. A bonnet is positioned in the chamber upper portion and is connected to the valve body and extends upwardly therefrom. The bonnet includes a passageway, and a stem is positioned in the passageway for longitudinal movement into and out of sealing relation with the valve seat. An air operator is connected to the upper end of the stem and is connected to a source of fluid under pressure, such as compressed air, which is supplied by remote control to the air operator to control reciprocation of the stem to open and close the valve. The air operator includes a base connected to the bonnet in surrounding relation with the stem and positioned in spaced relation with a piston connected to the upper end of the stem to thereby form a fluid chamber. A housing encloses the piston and the base.

A hollow tubular body is welded to a distribution pipeline in surrounding relation with a cut-out portion of the pipeline. A plug assembly is inserted through an opened gate valve attached to the tubular body and into engagement with the tubular body. The gate valve is removed and an operator device is attached to the plug assembly. The plug assembly includes an expandable portion and an insert portion. The expandable portion includes an enlarged first chamber and a reduced second chamber. A plug assembly guide is positioned between the expandable portion and the insert portion. A nonrising actuating stem is rotated to nonrotatably move the plug assembly guide to advance the expandable portion through the tubular body and the cut-out portion to a position abutting the bottom of the pipeline for expansion of the expandable portion. Continued rotation of the stem downwardly advances the plug assembly guide to exert a first force externally and downwardly upon the expandable portion and move the insert portion into the expandable portion reduced second chamber to exert a second force internally and radially outwardly upon the expandable portion. Thus the expandable portion is expanded outwardly into sealing relation with the pipeline to block flow in the pipeline.

The incubator is located intermediate the runout cooling means. In a preferred form the final reducing stand is a hot reversing mill. A second incubator and/or a temper mill and/or a slitter may be positioned downstream of the first incubator. The method of rolling includes isothermally treating the strip within a predetermined time and temperature range in the incubator prior to subsequent processing. The subsequent processing may include any one or more of the following: further deformation by cold rolling, temper rolling or cooling at a desired heat loss rate.

A method of underwinding strip on a drum along the passline of a hot reversing mill comprises positioning the drum in a receiving mode, passing the strip through the mill at a given thread speed, detecting the presence of the strip at a given position in relation to the drum, activating the drum in an underwinding direction at a given time delay representative of a distance in which the strip is through the drum slot and internal of the drum, and speed matching the drum and the strip in an initial surface winding mode and a subsequent center driven tension mode. The apparatus includes a pair of drums, each positioned on an opposite side of the hot reversing mill, a pair of gates, each positioned along the table rolls to deflect the strip into the drum slots, a tilt table roll assembly on each side of the mill adapted to pivot into engagement with the drum downstream of the slot to retain the strip against a portion of the drum, detection means positioned between the drum and the mill to detect the presence of the strip, activation means for causing each drum to rotate in an underwinding direction when the strip enters the slot, and to speed match each drum to the strip, and a converting means for converting each drum from a surface winding mode to a center driven tension mode after a given number of wraps.

The drop-out conveyor comprises at least one reciprocating carriage or slab cart movable between a first slab loading position and a second slab discharge position. A drop-out conveyor for a pusher-type slab reheat furnace having a sloped dropout is disclosed. The drop-out conveyor comprises a plurality of reciprocating slab carts movable between a first loading position within the furnace and a second discharge position outside of the furnace. A track is provided for supporting each of the carts along the sloped dropout of the furnace between the loading position and the discharge position. A mechanism is provided for reciprocating each cart between the first position and the second position. The present invention additionally includes a device for removing the slabs from the slab cart to a roller table at the discharge position.
