For example, methods and materials that involve assessing a breast cancer patient's cytochrome P450, family 2, subfamily D, polypeptide 6 (CYP2D6) genotype to determine the likelihood of the beast cancer patient to experience breast cancer relapse or death are provided. Methods and materials that involve assessing the likelihood that a breast cancer patient being treated with tamoxifen will experience side effects such as hot flashes also are provided.
