System And Method For Interfacing A Can Device And A Peripheral Device

System And Method For Interfacing A Can Device And A Peripheral Device

US Patent:
6845416, Jan 18, 2005
Filed:
Aug 2, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/630844
Inventors:
Zaki Chasmawala - Austin TX, US
William R. Pitts - Round Rock TX, US
Rodney W. Cummings - Austin TX, US
James W. Edwards - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
National Instruments Corporation - Austin TX
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
710107, 710305, 713400
Abstract:
A system for interfacing a host computer to a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The system comprises a memory, an embedded processor and interface logic. The memory stores program code. The embedded processor couples to the memory and executes the program code. The interface logic interfaces the embedded processor with an interconnecting bus, e. g. , the Real-Time System Integration (RTSI) bus. In response to execution of the program code, the embedded processor is operable to perform a CAN event in response to the interface logic receiving a RTSI trigger signal on a selected line of the RTSI bus. A peripheral device also coupled to the host computer assert the trigger signal in response to the peripheral device receiving and/or transmitting data. Furthermore, the interface logic is configured to assert a RTSI trigger signal on a selected line of said RTSI bus in response to the embedded processor performing a CAN event. CAN events include transmission/reception of a CAN frame.

Fieldbus Connector Including Dual Connectors

Fieldbus Connector Including Dual Connectors

US Patent:
5938754, Aug 17, 1999
Filed:
Nov 26, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/979968
Inventors:
James W. Edwards - Austin TX
William R. Pitts - Round Rock TX
Michael S. Butler - Austin TX
Assignee:
National Instruments Corporation - Austin TX
International Classification:
G06F 1300
US Classification:
710129
Abstract:
An improved dual-connector cable for connecting a computer to a serial instrumentation bus. In one embodiment, the serial instrumentation bus is a fieldbus, preferably either a Foundation fieldbus or a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The cable comprises a first terminal located at a first end of the cable for coupling the cable to the computer. The first terminal comprises a device connector which is configured to connect the first terminal to a connector on the computer. The cable also comprises a second terminal located at a second end of the cable for coupling the cable to the serial instrumentation bus. The second terminal comprises interface circuitry for interfacing the cable with the serial instrumentation bus. The second terminal further comprises a first bus connector that is electrically coupled to the serial instrumentation interface circuitry. The first bus connector is configured to connect to a mating connector for coupling to the serial instrumentation bus.

Using A Dual Purpose Physical Layer Interface For A Flexible Chassis-Based Server

Using A Dual Purpose Physical Layer Interface For A Flexible Chassis-Based Server

US Patent:
2007023, Oct 11, 2007
Filed:
Apr 11, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/401598
Inventors:
James Edwards - Austin TX, US
Thao Hoang - Cedar Park TX, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/28, H04L 12/66
US Classification:
370351000, 370463000
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for selectively routing traffic from a port in a switch for use in a chassis-based server are provided. The switch may include a flexible physical layer component, allowing traffic from a channel (e.g., an Ethernet channel) to be routed to a connector on a front panel of the switch or to switch cross-connect routing in a backplane of the server system. The routing may be selectable by a user, for example, under software control, allowing flexibility to the user to select the routing that best fits an application, while conserving resources by not requiring a dedicated channel for each routing data path.
