Rail Obstruction Sensing Means For A Rail Transportation System

US Patent:
3995560, Dec 7, 1976
Filed:
Aug 12, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/603951
Inventors:
Charles Mackintosh - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
B61B 1300
US Classification:
104 1R
Abstract:
In a rail transportation system, a sensor assembly is mountable on a rail vehicle for detecting, during the travel thereof, a rail obstruction which would inhibit continued and uninterrupted travel of the vehicle and for transmitting such detection to the vehicle speed control for regulating the same to thereby avoid a perilous situation. The sensor assembly includes a leashed sensor element which is guidingly propelled forwardly of the vehicle parallel to the rail at a distance required for a comfortable stop depending on vehicle speed. Travel of the sensor element is retarded upon contacting the obstruction thereby causing a reel to which the leash is connected to rewind and accordingly regulate the vehicle speed control to bring the travelling vehicle to a complete and safe stop if necessary.

Transportation System

US Patent:
4000702, Jan 4, 1977
Filed:
Jul 24, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/598875
Inventors:
Charles Mackintosh - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
B61B 1202
US Classification:
104244
Abstract:
A transportation system includes a pair of rails spaced transversely of an elongated track on which flanged support wheels of a vehicle are adapted for travel along the sides, top or bottom of the track. The support wheels are transversely spaced apart by at least one-half the width or one-half the height of the vehicle and are sloped to respectively lie in planes intersecting at the center of gravity of the vehicle. Accordingly, horizontal forces acting on the vehicle during travel around curves produce no stresses on the wheel flanges but increase direct stress on one set of wheels and decrease direct stress on the other set of wheels. In another embodiment, the wheels are designed to tip parallel to the resultant forces acting on the wheels during horizontal force changes acting on the vehicle. Such is effected by the provision of curved bearing surfaces associated with the rails and mounted on the wheel mounts in such a manner that the thrusts of the car supports acting on the bearing elements intersect below the wheel bearing surfaces of the rails.

Movable Seating Method

US Patent:
4162594, Jul 31, 1979
Filed:
Apr 18, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/897546
Inventors:
Charles Mackintosh - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
E04H 312
US Classification:
52 9
Abstract:
A plurality of portable grandstand seating sections forming a grandstand are each provided with central ground-engaging wheels and footings, either of which being retractable and extendable for supporting each section alternately with the wheels and the central footings. A collapsible and extendable rear footing is also provided on each section. The sections are capable of being transported between grandstand and storage locations by towing them on the wheels with the rear footings collapsed. A first of such sections which forms an end section of the grandstand is lifted at the grandstand location and is shifted away from an adjoining section, the wheels are placed in a ground-engaging position, the rear footing is collapsed, the rearward end of the section is lowered relative to the wheels and the section is towed on the wheels while supporting the rearward end. The second and remaining sections are thereafter transported in succession to the storage location. When transporting the sections to the grandstand location, a section is rolled on the wheels while supporting its rearward end with the rear footing collapsed.

Power Operated Wheelchair

US Patent:
4274503, Jun 23, 1981
Filed:
Sep 24, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/078096
Inventors:
Charles Mackintosh - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
B62D 6110
US Classification:
180 23
Abstract:
A wheelchair assembly includes an occupant seat having a central shaft for mounting the seat on an undercarriage for universal tilting movement, for vertical movement along the shaft axis and for rotation about such axis. The undercarriage has a plurality of ground engaging wheels driven together by a driving mechanism which includes a drive motor and steered together by a steering mechanism which includes a steering motor. The steering motor may be operatively connected with both the seat and the wheels for turning them together by operation of a control assembly, or the steering motor may be operatively connected with only the seat or with only the wheels for independent operation. Otherwise, the steering mechanism may couple the seat with the wheels while the steering motor is disconnected so that wheel steering may be operated by a manual turning of the seat. An analyzer assembly compares the direction of travel chosen by the seat occupant to the actual orientation of the wheels and then directs the steering motor to align the wheels to the direction chosen, without turning the chair.

System For Rolling And Unrolling A Ground Cover

US Patent:
4640469, Feb 3, 1987
Filed:
Aug 15, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/766425
Inventors:
Charles Mackintosh - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
B65H 1600, B65H 1810
US Classification:
242 55
Abstract:
A system for tightly rolling and unrolling a web employed as a ground cover includes the use of unrolling tapes for unrolling the web, and an unpowered gear motor which serves to retard unrolling, rollup tapes and/or the gear motor being employed for rolling up the web together with an elongated flexible and unstretchable tube partially filled with fluid which supports the web and causes it to slip on itself for tightening any web bulges while being rolled up.

Track Switching Arrangement

US Patent:
4152992, May 8, 1979
Filed:
Oct 31, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/847066
Inventors:
Charles Mackintosh - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
E01B 2506, E01B 2526
US Classification:
104130
Abstract:
A switching arrangement for an elevated track having upper and lower rails includes a pair of first upper and lower switch beams at a switching interruption along the track, the beams being movable from a position of rail alignment with the upper and lower rails to a position shifted toward on another. For switching a rail vehicle to a secondary track, a pair of second upper and lower switch beams are provided at the switching interruption for movement toward and away from one another between a position out of rail alignment with the upper and lower rails to a position into alignment therewith when the first beams are shifted toward one another.
