Philosophy:
I am a urologic surgeon who specializes in surgery for men and women with cancers of the genitourinary system. Examples of the specific tumors that I treat include cancers of the bladder, prostate, and kidney. My main areas of expertise include radical surgical procedures for invasive bladder cancer and reconstructive surgery of the urinary system following radical cystectomy or pelvic exenteration. Removal of the bladder, also called radical cystectomy, serves as the standard for definitive treatment of high-risk bladder tumors and can provide a cure in the majority of patients with early, invasive lesions. Function-sparing procedures (including preservation of the nerves responsible for erectile function and advanced reconstructive techniques that re-create the natural urination pathway after bladder removal) are also performed to provide an excellent postoperative quality of life.
I am also actively involved in clinical research to determine which treatments are most likely to maximize individual patients' chances of a cure. I have served as the lead investigator for an international effort to develop an outcomes nomogram, which provides a tool to more accurately estimate a patient's risk for recurrence after treatment for bladder cancer. This tool will provide patients and doctors with better information regarding the need for subsequent treatment (i.e., chemotherapy) following surgery. I am also the principal investigator of other studies evaluating how improved surgical quality or advanced diagnostic imaging may help us in the management of genitourinary tumors.
I joined the MSKCC staff in 2000 in the Department of Urology and currently hold the position of Associate Attending Surgeon. I serve as the coordinator of the bladder cancer multi-disciplinary working group and am co-Director of the Pelvic Reconstruction/Surgery Group at MSKCC. I am actively involved in urologic oncology at the national level, serving as faculty for post-graduate courses in urologic oncology for the American Urological Association. I also serve on the program organizing committee within the Society of Urologic Oncology, and editorial boards for urology-related journals. Additionally I am a reviewer for several peer-reviewed cancer and urology journals.
