Philosophy:
I believe that each individual in a relationship plays an important role in contributing to change. When one person in the family or marriage changes something, the other person is affected. Personal challenges, such as grief, stress or PTSD affect not just the individual but those around them. When the entire family or a spouse is involved in treatment, it is amazing how much improvement can occur when an individual feels supported by loved ones.
I also believe that thoughts, feelings and behaviors are all interconnected. When you change one part of this triangle, all the other parts change with it. The first and most important part in treatment is developing that relationship with the client where they feel safe. A safe place is key to motivating clients towards change.
I provide a unique perspective in treatment, particularly with the Asian/Pacific Islander community. Sometimes working with a therapist who is familiar with cultural norms can allow individuals to maintain cultural beliefs within mainstream society. Challenges are often worked out within the family or not discussed at all; I help clients find new ways of working through those challenges within the family unit.
