Multi-Electrode Channel Configurations

US Patent:
2010019, Aug 5, 2010
Filed:
Feb 5, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/366510
Inventors:
Zachary M. Smith - Englewood CO, US
Assignee:
COCHLEAR LIMITED - Lane Cove
International Classification:
A61F 11/04, A61N 1/08
US Classification:
607 57
Abstract:
An apparatus and method optimizing complex channel configurations to produce minimal channel interactions is provided. The method includes selecting multiple channels from a channel configuration including a plurality of channels, each of the plurality of channels includes multiple electrodes. The method also includes measuring an interaction between selected channels and determining a significance of the measured interaction. The method further includes adjusting a focus of the channel configuration based on the significance of measured interaction, wherein the focus of the channel configuration is not adjusted if the interaction between the selected channels determined to be insignificant. The measuring, determining and adjusting is repeated until the interaction between the selected channels is determined to be insignificant or the magnitude of the interaction is determined to be minimized, thereby optimizing the channel configuration for the selected channels. Another set of channels from the channel configuration is selected and the measuring, determining, adjusting and repeating is performed for each set until full channel configuration is optimized.

Configuring An Electrically Stimulating Device To Stimulate Using A Subset Of Electrode Contacts

US Patent:
2013030, Nov 14, 2013
Filed:
May 11, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/469912
Inventors:
Zachary Smith - Englewood CO, US
Chris van den Honert - Boulder CO, US
International Classification:
A61N 1/36, A61F 11/04
US Classification:
607 57
Abstract:
A method of configuring a prosthesis having two or more electrode contacts, including configuring the prosthesis to provide stimulation to a first tissue site from a subset of electrode contacts based on data based on a comparison of first data to second data, wherein the first data is based on respective estimated voltages for the first site and one or more of additional respective sites to be applied by the subset of electrode contacts, the respective estimated voltages being based on empirical stimulation data for the first and additional sites, and the second data is based on respective target voltages for the first and additional sites, respectively.

Fitting Bilateral Hearing Prostheses

US Patent:
2014005, Feb 20, 2014
Filed:
Aug 14, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/585596
Inventors:
Zachary M. Smith - Greenwood Village CO, US
Assignee:
COCHLEAR LIMITED - Macquarie University
International Classification:
A61F 11/04, H04R 25/00
US Classification:
607 57
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are methods, systems, and computing devices for fitting bilateral hearing prostheses. An example method includes sending a signal to a first hearing prosthesis and a second hearing prosthesis. The signal causes the first hearing prosthesis to deliver a first stimulus to a body part in a left auditory pathway of a user. The signal also causes the second hearing prosthesis to deliver a second stimulus to a body part in a right auditory pathway of the user. The first stimulus and the second stimulus cause the user to perceive a sound and are delivered simultaneously. The method also includes receiving an indication of a perception of the sound by the user. The method further includes determining an adjustment to at least one of the first stimulus or the second stimulus based on the perception of the sound by the user.

Stimulus Timing For A Stimulating Medical Device

US Patent:
2010019, Aug 5, 2010
Filed:
Feb 5, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/366462
Inventors:
Zachary Mark Smith - Englewood CO, US
Assignee:
COCHLEAR LIMITED - Lane Cove
International Classification:
A61F 11/04, A61N 1/36
US Classification:
607 57
Abstract:
Methods and systems are disclosed for determining the timing of stimulation applied using a medical device. In embodiments, the medical device filters a received signal to obtain a plurality of band-pass filtered signals, each corresponding to one or more stimulation channels. The medical device then determines the envelopes of these band-pass filtered signals. Next, the medical device determines the stimulation timing (i.e., the pulse times) for the corresponding stimulation channel based on the timing of a particular phase (e.g., a peak, a minimum, etc.) of the envelope. A pulse amplitude for the stimulation channel may then be determined, and stimulation applied using the determined amplitude and pulse time.

Using Interaction To Measure Neural Excitation

US Patent:
8391993, Mar 5, 2013
Filed:
Jul 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/172850
Inventors:
Christoper van den Honert - Boulder CO, US
Zachary Smith - Englewood CO, US
Christopher J. Long - Centennial CO, US
Daniel M. Lisogurski - Boulder CO, US
Robert P. Carlyon - Cambridge, GB
Assignee:
Cochlear Limited - Macquarie University, NSW
International Classification:
A61F 11/04
US Classification:
607115, 607 1, 607 2, 607 55, 607 56, 607 57, 607136, 607137
Abstract:
Assessment of neuron excitation is implemented by quantifying the interaction between focused and unfocused stimulation applied to a cochlear array. By applying focused and unfocused stimulation to the electrode array and comparing the difference in the responses to the two types of stimulation the interaction may be determined. The magnitude of the interaction may be related to neural excitation and using this data a neural excitation profile may be determined.

Multi-Electrode Channel Configurations

US Patent:
2011028, Nov 24, 2011
Filed:
May 18, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/782604
Inventors:
Zachary M. Smith - Englewood CO, US
Christopher van den Honert - Englewood CO, US
International Classification:
A61N 1/05
US Classification:
607 57
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for determining stimulation channels for a stimulating device is provided. This method and apparatus may involve computing a set of weights for the plurality of stimulation channels of the stimulating hearing prosthesis. These weights may be determined by determining a transimpedance matrix for the stimulating hearing prosthesis where a diagonal of the transimpedance matrix is determined by extrapolation. A transadmittance matrix may then be computed for this transimpedance matrix. An error may then be computed base on positive off-diagonal terms of the transadmittance matrix. The apparatus and method may determine the weights for the stimulation channels by determining an adjustment to the diagonal of the transimpedance matrix that results in a computed error that does not exceed a specified criterion level.
