Abstract:
A gear member for an automatically shiftable vehicular transmission is provided having a gear body with a generally cylindrical outer surface having a plurality of radially outwardly extending gear teeth formed thereon. An inner surface is generally coaxially disposed with respect to the generally cylindrical outer surface and extends for at least a portion of the gear body. Additionally, a plurality of radially inwardly extending splines is formed on at least a portion of the inner surface. At least one of the plurality of radially outwardly extending gear teeth and the plurality of radially inwardly extending splines are cold extruded. A method of forming the gear member is also provided including forming a generally tubular blank by reverse extrusion of a generally cylindrical slug. Subsequently, a plurality gear teeth are formed on at least a portion of the generally tubular blank by cold extrusion to form the gear member.

Abstract:
A planetary gearset is provided having an internal ring gear with a plurality of generally radially inwardly extending teeth in meshing engagement with at least one pinion gear. A hub portion extends generally radially inwardly from the internal ring gear. The internal ring gear and the hub portion are integrally formed. Additionally, the internal ring gear and hub portion may be integrally formed by one of a spinning operation, powdered metal compaction, and cold extrusion.

Abstract:
A method of forming an article such as a helical gear and an apparatus for forming the article are provided. The method includes applying pulsating pressure downward to extruding the work piece and, while the pressure is applied downward, injecting fluid to surround the work piece in fluid. The method eliminates pickling processes and phosphate lube coatings typically required for extrusion and external machining steps subsequently required to remove the coating. Extrusion of a cold net-formed article is thus possible due. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also provided.

Abstract:
A ball dump valve for a rotary clutch assembly has a valve housing with a shoulder which abuts a wall surface on the housing of the clutch assembly. A displaceable component or finger is swaged to abut another wall on the clutch assembly housing to thereby securely fasten the valve housing in the clutch assembly. The interior of the valve housing has a chamber in which is disposed a ball. The chamber has a frusto-conical surface with an opening therein. The ball is seated by pressure against the frusto-conical surface to close the valve and is urged along the frusto-conical surface by centrifugal force to open the valve.
