Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are disclosed for determining the volume, hemoglobin concentration, maturity and cell shape of mammalian red blood cells in a whole blood sample and simultaneously monitoring system standardization. Methods for distinguishing red blood cells from other cellular particles, prior to the red blood cell analysis are also disclosed. Red blood cells are passed through a beam of light in single file at a selected wavelength, obtaining an initial cytogram by means of the resultant magnitude of one light loss signal and one forward angle light scatter signal at a selected angular interval and a third side angle light scatter or two forward angle light scatter signals at a selected angular intervals and a third side-angle light scatter signal, projecting the cytogram, point by point, onto a pre-calibrated 3-dimensional surface containing grid lines of volume and hemoglobin concentration and determining accurate values of cell volume and hemoglobin concentration.

Embodiments of the invention are generally directed to transmission and detection of multi-channel signals in reduced channel format. An embodiment of a method for transmitting data includes determining whether a first type or a second type of content data is to be transmitted, where the first type of content data is to be transmitted at a first multiple of a base frequency and the second type of data is to be transmitted at a second multiple of the base frequency. The method further includes selecting one or more channels from a plurality of channels based on the type of content data, clocking a frequency on the first or second multiple of the base frequency according to the type of content data in the selected channels, modifying the content data to fit within a single output channel, and transmitting the modified data via a single output channel at the chosen multiple of the base frequency.

Embodiments of the invention are generally directed to transmission and handling of three-dimensional video content. An embodiment of a method includes receiving a multimedia data stream including video data utilizing an interface protocol and determining that the received video data includes three-dimensional (3D) video data, where each frame of the video data includes a first vertical synchronization (Vsync) signal prior to an active data region, the active data region including a first data region and a second data region. The method further includes converting the 3D video data from a 3D data format to a two-dimensional (2D) video format, where converting the 3D video data includes identifying a region between the first data region and the second data region, inserting a second Vsync signal between the first data region and the second data region, and providing an identifier to distinguish between the first data region and the second data region.

Abstract:
A cyanide-free method and reagent for determining the concentration of total hemoglobin in a whole blood sample accurately in less than 10 seconds including a ligand selected from the group consisting of imidiazole, imidazole derivatives, N-hydroxyacetamide, N-hydroxyl amine, pyridine, oxazole, thiazole, pyrazole, pyrimidine, purine, quinoline, and isoquinoline, and a surfactant with strong erythrolytic capability selected from the group consisting of lauryl dimethylamine oxide and octylphenoxy polyethoxyethanol. The reagent pH is adjusted to about 11 to about 14. Rapid mixing of the reagent with a blood sample leads to the formation of a stable chromogen whose absorbance can be measured between 540 and 550 nm. The cyanide-free reagent is ideal for use on an automated high through-put clinical hematology analyzer.

A method and reagent for the simultaneous or independent enumeration of reticulocytes in a whole blood sample, without the need to separately incubate the sample and reagent. The reagent contains a reticulocyte staining amount of an unsymmetrical cyanine dye, from about 40 mM to about 60 mM of a buffer selected from the group consisting of imidazole, Tris and Bis-Tris and a dye stabilizing amount of a non-ionic surfactant selected from the group consisting of N, N-bis�3-D-Glucon-amidopropyl! cholamide and a polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene block copolymer. The reagent has a pH from about 6. 8 to about 7. 2 and an osmolarity adjusted to about 280 to about 310 mosm/l with a mono-, or di-, valent alkali salt selected from the group consisting of NaCl, KCl, LiCl, CaCl. sub. 2, MgCl. sub. 2 and ZnCl. sub. 2. The method utilizes the reagent in a no incubation process that also allows for the simultaneous determination of CBC as well as reticulocyte counts and maturity indices.

A mechanism for memory reduction in picture-in-picture video generation is disclosed. A method of embodiments of the invention includes receiving, from a transmitting device, a plurality of video streams at a receiving device coupled to the transmitting device, wherein a first video stream of the plurality of video streams is designated to be displayed as a main video and one or more other video streams of the plurality of video streams are designated to be displayed as one or more sub videos to the main video. The method further includes transforming the one or more other video streams into the one or more sub videos, temporarily holding the one or more sub videos in a compressed frame buffer, and merging, via pixel replacement, the main video and the one or more sub videos into a final video image capable of being displayed on a single screen utilizing a display device, wherein pixel replacement is performed such that the one or more sub videos occupy one or more sections of pixels of screen space pixels occupied by the main video.

A device for analyzing a whole blood sample is provided. The device comprises a conventional hematology analyzer integrated with a fluorescence cytometry analyzer. A controller is provided for controlling the analyzers, obtaining and utilizing data from both and reporting a quantitative result. Methods are also provided for analyzing a whole blood sample.
