Method For Attenuating Surface Wavetrains In Seismic Data

Method For Attenuating Surface Wavetrains In Seismic Data

US Patent:
5781503, Jul 14, 1998
Filed:
Jan 29, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/790947
Inventors:
Young C. Kim - Houston TX
Assignee:
Exxon Production Research Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01V 128, G01V 136
US Classification:
367 45
Abstract:
A method for attenuating source-generated surface wavetrains in a set of seismic data traces. According to the method, the seismic data traces are Fourier transformed with respect to time to determine the frequency components of the surface wavetrain. A phase matching operation is then performed using estimates of the wavenumbers for each of the frequency components to approximately align the surface wavetrain in the seismic data traces. Next, a spatial low-pass filter is used to remove the approximately aligned surface wavetrain. Finally, the phase matching is removed and an inverse Fourier transformation is performed to return the seismic data traces to the time domain.

Turning-Wave Amplitude Inversion

Turning-Wave Amplitude Inversion

US Patent:
6278950, Aug 21, 2001
Filed:
Mar 2, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/517365
Inventors:
Young C. Kim - Houston TX
Arturo E. Romero - Sugar Land TX
Michael M. Deal - Houston TX
Assignee:
ExxonMobil Upstream Research Co. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01V 128
US Classification:
702 17
Abstract:
A method for compensating for amplitude loss in a set of seismic traces, where the amplitude loss is caused by shallow attenuation anomalies. Attenuation factors are calculated from first-arrival amplitudes for long-offset seismic data traces. Those factors are calculated by numerical methods, using matrix inversion and iteration. Those factors are used to adjust upward the amplitudes of all later-arriving seismic traces. Frequency dependent attenuation is treated by dividing the seismic traces into frequency ranges using band-pass filters, then using the above-described method within each frequency range after which the adjusted amplitudes are recombined. Amplitude variations caused by inconsistencies in the data acquisition system, such as a source strength variation, are also treated by a similar approach.

Seismic Migration Method

Seismic Migration Method

US Patent:
H4820, Jun 7, 1988
Filed:
Oct 20, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/920552
Inventors:
John R. Berryhill - Houston TX
Ruth Gonzalez - Houston TX
Young C. Kim - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01V 100
US Classification:
367 38
Abstract:
A seismic data processing method in which seismic traces (each trace containing a signal resulting from reflection of a seismic signal at a location within the earth, and each trace being associated with at least one point in a two-dimensional spatial grid (x,y)) are subjected to Fourier transformations, the coefficients of the Fourier-Transformed traces are subjected to a recursive KF migration operation, and the migrated traces are thereafter inverse-Fourier-transformed. When displayed, the processed seismic data accurately represents the position within the earth of whatever caused the reflection. The method may be employed to process stacked seismic traces, each associated with a single point (x,y) in the grid, or may be employed to process unstacked seismic traces, each associated with both a seismic source location (x. sub. s,y. sub. 5) and a different seismic receiver location (x. sub. r,y. sub. r) in the grid.

Seismic Depth Imaging

Seismic Depth Imaging

US Patent:
5243563, Sep 7, 1993
Filed:
Oct 2, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/957971
Inventors:
Young C. Kim - Houston TX
Assignee:
Exxon Production Research Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01V 136
US Classification:
367 50
Abstract:
The mispositioning of reflectors in a velocity analysis enhanced common-offset time migrated image is corrected by carrying out inverse migration on the time image, followed by zero-offset depth migration.
