Mass Spectrometry With Multiple Ionization Sources And Multiple Mass Analyzers

US Patent:
7329864, Feb 12, 2008
Filed:
Sep 12, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/224622
Inventors:
Yang Wang - Westford MA, US
International Classification:
H01J 49/06, H01J 49/42
US Classification:
250288, 250281, 250292
Abstract:
Multiple ionization ion sources and multiple mass analyzers are combined into one mass spectrometer instrument by a six-electrodes ion trap or an array of six-electrodes ion traps. The six-electrodes ion trap can be operated as an independent two-dimensional ion guide or linear ion tap in an arbitrarily selected direction among three orthogonal XYZ directions. The two-dimensional ion guide/linear ion trap can be alternated from one direction to another among the three orthogonal directions electrically. A six-electrodes ion trap generates six equivalent importing and exporting interfaces, each of the interfaces can be used to trap external ions and transfer the trapped ions to any of the other five interfaces. The six-electrodes ion trap provide a mass spectrometer with versatility, multiply functions, high duty-cycles and high sample throughput.

Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry

US Patent:
7019289, Mar 28, 2006
Filed:
Jan 23, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/764252
Inventors:
Yang Wang - Westford MA, US
International Classification:
H01J 49/04
US Classification:
250290, 250291, 250292, 250294
Abstract:
An ion trap comprises a three-dimensional, rotationally symmetric ring electrode and two cap electrodes with hyperbolic surfaces facing toward the inside of the ion trap, each of the two cap electrodes being further composed of a first hyperbolic cone electrode and a second disk electrode. The ion trap also includes a RF or periodic circuitry constructed and arranged for applying a RF or periodic voltage to the ring electrode to generate a main quadrupole field, an AC circuitry constructed and arranged for applying an AC voltage to the disk electrodes of said two cap electrodes to generate a dipole field, and a DC circuitry constructed and arranged for applying an DC voltage to the cone electrodes of the two cap electrodes to independently generate an electrically variable electrostatic octopole field in the ion trap. The ion trap is capable to achieve higher mass-resolving power, especially in higher gas pressure or lower vacuum condition. To achieve higher mass-measuring sensitivity, the ion trap can be switched electrically between the three-dimensional trap mode and two-dimensional trap mode by dividing the trap's ring electrode into multiple elements.

Corona Discharge Ionization Sources For Mass Spectrometric And Ion Mobility Spectrometric Analysis Of Gas-Phase Chemical Species

US Patent:
7326926, Feb 5, 2008
Filed:
Jul 6, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/175535
Inventors:
Yang Wang - Westford MA, US
International Classification:
H01J 49/10
US Classification:
250288, 250423 R, 250424, 250324, 264 22, 422907, 436173
Abstract:
A corona discharge mass spectrometer or an ion mobility spectrometer is provided with a robust corona discharge ionization source. The corona discharge ionization source, which can be operated at atmospheric pressures or at low vacuum, includes a multi-thread electrode and plane electrode. The multiple thread electrode has multiple discharge tips which provide redundancy, and improve ionization stability and the reliability and efficiency of the ionization source.

Combined Ambient Desorption And Ionization Source For Mass Spectrometry

US Patent:
7462824, Dec 9, 2008
Filed:
Apr 28, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/413733
Inventors:
Yang Wang - Westford MA, US
International Classification:
B01D 59/44, H01J 49/00
US Classification:
250288, 250281, 250282, 250283, 250287, 250423 R, 250424, 250324, 422907, 436173
Abstract:
Combined desorption and ionization sources are provided to generate molecular ions form a sample disposed on a substrate surface. A heated gas-jet probe or heated solvent stream probe desorbs sample molecules into the gas phase. The desorbed sample molecules are ionized by reaction between the sample molecule and charged solvent droplets. The charged solvent droplets may be produced by electrospray probe or by a corona discharge. The combined desorption and ionization sources coupled by a vacuum interface to a mass spectrometer, where the sample molecule ions can be analyzed.

Filed:
Feb 14, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/057345
Inventors:
Yang Wang - Westford MA, US
International Classification:
H01J 49/40
US Classification:
250290, 250291, 250292, 250294
Abstract:
An ion trap comprises a three-dimensional rotationally symmetric ring electrode and two cap electrodes, the ring electrode is divided, in parallel to its central axis, into a plurality of even number, equal or larger than four, of component electrodes.
