Temperature Measurement Apparatuses And Method Utilizing The Alexandrite Effect

US Patent:
7052177, May 30, 2006
Filed:
Apr 22, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/112054
Inventors:
Yan Liu - Monterey Park CA, US
International Classification:
G01K 11/00, G01J 5/00
US Classification:
374162, 374130, 374121
Abstract:
A method and apparatuses for measuring the temperature of a radiating body utilizing the alexandrite effect. The method includes the steps of generating a mathematical relationship between a hue value and temperature for an alexandrite effect filter, receiving radiation from the radiating body, measuring a spectral power distribution of the radiation, calculating the hue value based on the spectral power distribution, and determining the temperature using the mathematical relationship. To implement the method, the apparatuses include an optical probe, a spectral or calorimetric measurement device, and a computer. The apparatuses can measure the temperature of any radiating body with or without spectral lines in the spectral power distribution, and are particularly advantageous to measure high to ultrahigh temperature for radiating bodies with spectral lines, such as plasma, electric arc, and high temperature flames.

Apparatus And Method For Color Measurement And Color Grading Of Diamonds, Gemstones And The Like

US Patent:
7652755, Jan 26, 2010
Filed:
Feb 23, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/678564
Inventors:
Yan Liu - Monterey Park CA, US
International Classification:
G01N 21/00, G01J 1/04
US Classification:
356 30, 356236, 250228
Abstract:
The present invention discloses an apparatus that comprises a spectrometer, and computer and a dual integrating sphere measurement arrangement comprising a measurement integrating sphere, a sample integrating sphere, a sample platform, a filter, a lens system, a baffle and a light source. The sample integrating sphere encloses a sample to provide a constant environment for simulating the visual color grading environment. The computer controls the spectrometer and provides measurement parameters calculated from physical parameters of the measured sample, including, but not limited to, shape, dimensions, refractive index, intensity of fluorescence and cut grade. The computer then calculates spectral reflectance and colorimetric data, and determines an average color grade by checking a look-up-table that represents the relationship between the CIELAB coordinate and the average color grade. The computer also determines a true color grade based upon the average color grade and the physical parameters, using mathematical analytic algorithms.

Apparatus And Method For Color Measurement And Color Grading Of Diamonds, Gemstones, And The Like

US Patent:
2010014, Jun 10, 2010
Filed:
Jun 2, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/477091
Inventors:
YAN Liu - Monterey Park CA, US
International Classification:
G01N 21/55
US Classification:
356 30
Abstract:
The present invention discloses method for color measurement and color grading of faceted gemstones, diamonds and the like. A novel three-step calibration insures an accurate spectral measurement of the sample inside the measurement integrating sphere. Using the method of the present invention, a computer provides measurement parameters calculated from the physical parameters of the measured sample, including, but not limited to, shape, dimensions, refractive index, intensity of fluorescence and cut grade. By means of the present invention, a computer then calculates the spectral reflectance and colorimetric data, and determines an average color grade by checking a look-up-table that represents the relationship between the CIELAB coordinate and the average color grade, and it also determines a true color grade based upon the average color grade and the physical parameters, using mathematical analyses and algorithms.

Method And System For Color Grading Of Gemstones

US Patent:
7388656, Jun 17, 2008
Filed:
Dec 30, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/322431
Inventors:
Yan Liu - Monterey Park CA, US
International Classification:
G01N 21/87
US Classification:
356 30
Abstract:
A method and system, including a computer program product, implementing a color terminology for accurate color grading of gemstones are provided. The method includes generating a reference color to match that of a graded gemstone under the standard viewing environment, processing color data in different color spaces, assigning a color grade to specify the color of the gemstone graded. The reference color can be continuously changed by adjusting the hue, lightness and saturation values. The color grade comprises a color name and one or more corresponding color coordinates and/or one or more corresponding color notations, in the form of Color Name (Color Coordinates). The color name is used for verbal description of the color, and the color coordinate or color notation is for accurate color communication in the jewelry industry.

Optical Filter For Cie Daylight Simulator

US Patent:
7378784, May 27, 2008
Filed:
May 13, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/129703
Inventors:
Yan Liu - Monterey Park CA, US
International Classification:
H01J 5/16
US Classification:
313110, 313112
Abstract:
An optical filter used for modifying the spectral power distribution of high color temperature lamp to simulate CIE standard daylight illuminant. The optical filter comprising a heat-absorbing glass plate, a heat insulation washer, a longpass glass plate, and one or more spectral modification glass plate in series. The longpass glass plate and the heat absorbing glass plate determine the wavelength range, and the spectral modification glass plate(s) modify the spectral power distribution of the high color temperature halogen lamp. The CIE daylight simulators with the optical filter have very high colorimetric indexes.
