Method Of Compensating For Cutter Deflection

US Patent:
6582166, Jun 24, 2003
Filed:
Oct 22, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/425505
Inventors:
Wolfgang M. Strobel - Tolland CT
Robert J. Lockhart - Deep River CT
Assignee:
Gerber Scientific Products, Inc. - Manchester CT
International Classification:
B23C 100
US Classification:
409132, 409186, 83 56, 700193
Abstract:
A method of cutting planar material with a controlled cutting machine having a cutting tool with a tool tip includes performing a cutting test on various planar materials with the cutting machine under selected cutting conditions which produce deflection forces on the cutting tool due to the interaction of the cutting tool and materials so as to cause the tool tip to offset and move along deviated or offset cutting paths relative to desired cutting paths, and determining compensating offsets in order to align and coincide the actual cutting paths with the desired cutting paths A schedule of the compensating offsets to align and coincide the actual cutting paths with the desired cutting paths is established as determined by the cutting tests. The schedule is to be repeatedly used thereafter for cutting planar material having cutting conditions associated with the schedule. Planar material is cut thereafter along desired cutting paths by advancing the cutting tool and planar material relative to one another and employing the schedule of compensating offsets to control the actual cutting paths to align and coincide with the desired cutting paths when desired cutting paths and corresponding cutting conditions arise.

Method And Apparatus For Producing Signs With Prismatic Letters And Graphic Images

US Patent:
5575099, Nov 19, 1996
Filed:
May 3, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/434388
Inventors:
Wolfgang M. Strobel - Tolland CT
Barrett C. Gray - Tolland CT
Sanjay V. Sohoni - Longmeadow MA
Assignee:
Gerber Scientific Products, Inc. - Manchester CT
International Classification:
B27B 100, G09F 700, B23C 116
US Classification:
40584
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for producing signs having raised, prismatic graphic images such as letters, numbers and other graphic images. Initial values for the graphic images are provided, and includes information defining an initial graphic representation for the graphic images, and may also include a return, which is the measure of distance by which the graphic images are raised relative to a background of a sign. A cutting tool is provided and has a radius and a cutting angle. One tool path is determined using the initial graphic representation. Tool passes and depths for the other passes are determined using the initial graphic representation, the cutting angle, and a distance which is not greater than the tool radius. A controller generates signals indicative of the tool paths and respective depths, and presents the signals to operate an automatic cutting machine and cutting tool to selectively remove material from a sheet material to produce the graphic images.

Method And Apparatus For Applying Materials To An Optical Substrate

US Patent:
2005021, Sep 29, 2005
Filed:
Jan 21, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/040572
Inventors:
Alexander Incera - Pomfret Center CT, US
Wolfgang Strobel - Tolland CT, US
Thomas Gordon - Glastonbury CT, US
David Logan - Great Barrington MA, US
International Classification:
G02B006/00
US Classification:
385147000
Abstract:
The apparatus and method described utilizes a discrete deposition process to apply materials to an optical substrate. The materials can be applied to an optical substrate to create an ophthalmic lens or apply a coating to a lens or other optical surface. Average surface roughness below 10 nanometers can be achieved using the described apparatus and method. Localized error is minimized to less than 1 micron over a 1 mm linear distance to avoid a lens anomaly such as a localized power distortion or power wave. Coating is applied to an entire substrate surface or selected portions. Material can be deposited on the optical substrate to provide the substrate with desired refracting properties. One or more surfaces of the substrate can be coated. Waste material is minimized and a uniform coating is applied for the improvement of optical qualities of the substrate.
