Thrust Bearing/Coupling Component For Orbiting Scroll-Type Machinery And Scroll-Type Machinery Incorporating The Same

US Patent:
4259043, Mar 31, 1981
Filed:
Apr 23, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/032178
Inventors:
William P. Hidden - Wenham MA
John E. McCullough - Carlisle MA
Assignee:
Arthur D. Little, Inc. - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
F01C 2102
US Classification:
418 55
Abstract:
A thrust bearing/coupling component for use in scroll-type apparatus which may be a compressor, expander, fluid pump or vacuum pump. The resulting apparatus is particularly suited for use as auxiliary equipment in automotive power systems. The component of this invention comprises rotating or oscillating load carrying members, preferably ball bearings, confined within facing indentations cut in the orbiting scroll member end plate surface and an associated surface in a member stationary with respect to the orbiting scroll member. The thrust bearing/coupling component couples the stationary and orbiting scroll members in a predetermined angular relationship and it may be used to carry either expansive or compressive axial loads on the scroll members to achieve efficient radial sealing of the moving scroll fluid pockets while controlling surface wearing so that the scroll apparatus may be operated for an extended period of time without servicing.

Plastic Conveyor Belt System With Improved Product Support

US Patent:
4989723, Feb 5, 1991
Filed:
Feb 6, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/577361
Inventors:
Robert H. Bode - Wenham MA
William P. Hidden - Wenham MA
Assignee:
The Cambridge Wire Cloth Company - Cambridge MD
International Classification:
B65G 4774, B65G 1706
US Classification:
198635
Abstract:
An endless conveyor belt is assembled of plastic modules having relatively open pintle slots receiving respective connecting rods. The product support surface of the belt is provided by closely-spaced ribs especially well-suited for conveying raw foods and small containers. For transferring product to or from the belt, a transfer plate made-up of closely-spaced, flat-surfaced fingers is provided. The belt is driven and guided by sets of polygonal sprockets having teeth which engage in cavities centrally located on the undersides of the respective belt modules.

Liquid Immersible Scroll Pump

US Patent:
4160629, Jul 10, 1979
Filed:
Jun 17, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/807414
Inventors:
William P. Hidden - Wenham MA
John E. McCullough - Carlisle MA
Assignee:
Arthur D. Little, Inc. - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
F04C 102
US Classification:
418 55
Abstract:
A liquid immersible scroll pump in which all of the pump components including electric motor drive means are contained within a housing and through which the liquid is pumped at a controlled predetermined pressure. Hydraulic pressure within the pump provides sufficient axial force on the scroll members to enhance radial sealing as well as the tangential sealing of the flanks of the scroll wraps. The pump is particularly suited for low-cost mass production and may be used as a fuel pump, either immersed in the fuel tank of an automobile or mounted outside the tank, to provide fuel under pressure through a line to the engine.

Hydraulically Operated Riveting Machine

US Patent:
3955739, May 11, 1976
Filed:
Dec 30, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/537603
Inventors:
Richard L. Markus - Bridgeport CT
William P. Hidden - Wenham MA
Daniel F. Hefler - Concord MA
Assignee:
The Milford Rivet & Machine Company - Milford CT
International Classification:
B21J 1520
US Classification:
227 1
Abstract:
A hydraulically actuated power cylinder reciprocates a driver to exert a compressive force to upset a rivet with the power cylinder's movement being made to correspond to the movement of a pump cylinder by a fluid connection therebetween. The pump cylinder's movements are mechanically actuated according to a programmed cam and actuation is made to occur only during the riveting cycle by a control circuit operating a clutch and brake with the circuit inhibiting operation upon the sensing of a malfunction.
