Trunk-Mountable Camper Capsule For Automobiles

US Patent:
4181348, Jan 1, 1980
Filed:
Feb 22, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/880083
Inventors:
William N. Whitley - Shaker Heights OH
James M. Whitley - Shaker Heights OH
International Classification:
B60P 330
US Classification:
296165
Abstract:
A lightweight camper capsule for automobiles is releasably mountable about trunk portions of an automobile without requiring the formation of holes in the automobile body, whereby the watertight integrity of the automobile trunk compartment is maintained. A pivotal connection is established between the camper capsule and the rear bumper of the automobile, and a pair of body mounts are provided at opposite sides of the trunk lid opening. The body mounts are releasable to permit rearward pivoting of the camper capsule to provide access to the automobile's trunk compartment. The camper capsule is provided with a unique lightweight frame having rearwardly and sidewardly facing corner windows enhancing visibility. Provided within the capsule is an elongate seat overlying the automobile trunk lid and a foldable cot extension which normally lies along the front of the seat at a position rearwardly of the automobile's trunk compartment, the cot being foldable upwardly to cooperate with the seat in defining a two passenger bed. When the cot is in its bed-forming position, the floor portion of the capsule located below the cot provides a sleeping compartment for a third person.

4220369, Sep 2, 1980
Filed:
Aug 21, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/935649
Inventors:
William N. Whitley - Shaker Heights OH
James M. Whitley - Shaker Heights OH
International Classification:
B60D 332
US Classification:
296164
Abstract:
A lightweight, foldable camper capsule for automobiles is releasably mountable about trunk portions of an automobile without requiring the formation of holes in the automobile body, whereby the watertight integrity of the automobile trunk compartment is maintained. The camper capsule has side, front, top and back wall portions which are foldable to overlie the trunk compartment of an automobile, thereby enabling a relatively large camper capsule having a capability of sleeping three adults to be collapsed to a substantially reduced size for over-the-road travel. In one embodiment, the foldable side, front, top and back wall portions are formed from rigid materials and are pivotally mounted for folding. In another embodiment, the foldable side, front, and top wall portions are formed from flexible material such as canvass supported on a foldable framework.

The camper has a flat floor and front, rear, top and side walls which are foldable to compactly overlie the trunk of the automobile. In the extended position, the camper is relatively large and has the capability of sleeping at least two adults. In the collapsed position, the camper is substantially reduced in size for over-the-road travel. The camper includes a canopy having depending flanges which enclose the remainder of the camper when the camper is in a collapsed position. The expense of the camper is minimized by the use of cardboard as a construction material.
