International Classification:
C04B 3510
US Classification:
501 87
Abstract:
This invention relates generally to a novel method of preparing self-supporting bodies and to the novel products made thereby. In its more specific aspects, this invention relates to a method of producing self-supporting bodies having controlled porosity and graded properties and comprising one or more boron-containing compounds, e. g. , a boride or a boride and a carbide. The method comprises, in one embodiment, reacting a powdered parent metal, in molten form, with a bed or mass comprising a boron carbide material and, optionally, one or more inert fillers, to form the body. In another embodiment, both of a powdered parent metal and a body or pool of molten parent metal are induced to react with a bed or mass comprising a boron carbide material and, optionally, one or more inert fillers. in addition, combustible additives (e. g. , gelatin, corn starch, wax, etc.

US Patent:
5232040, Aug 3, 1993
Filed:
Nov 15, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/794607
Inventors:
William B. Johnson - Newark DE
James C. Wang - Newark DE
Assignee:
Lanxide Technology Company, LP - Newark DE
International Classification:
B22D 1902, B22D 1914
US Classification:
164 91
Abstract:
This invention relates generally to a novel method for removing metal from a formed self-supporting body. A self-supporting body is made by reactively infiltrating a molten parent metal into a bed or mass containing a boron source material and a carbon source material (e. g. , boron carbide) and/or a boron source material and a nitrogen source material (e. g. , boron nitride) and, optionally, one or more inert fillers. Once the self-supporting body is formed, it is then placed, at least partially, into contact with another material which causes metallic constituent contained in the self-supporting body to be at least partially removed.

US Patent:
4885130, Dec 5, 1989
Filed:
Jan 13, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/296771
Inventors:
Terry D. Claar - Newark DE
Steven M. Mason - Norwood PA
Kevin P. Pochopien - Newark DE
Danny R. White - Elkton MD
William B. Johnson - Newark DE
Assignee:
Lanxide Technology Company, LP - Newark DE
International Classification:
B22T 100
US Classification:
419 12
Abstract:
Self-supporting bodies are produced by reactive infiltration of a parent metal into a boron carbide material which may contain one or both of a boron donor material and a carbon donor material. The reactive infiltration typically results in a composite comprising a boron-containing compound, a carbon-containing compound and residual metal, if desired. The mass to be infiltrated may contain one or more inert fillers admixed with the boron carbide material, boron-containing compound and/or carbon-containing compound. The relative amounts of reactants and process conditions may be altered or controlled to yield a body containing varying volume percents of ceramic, metal, ratios of one ceramic to another and porosity.

Abstract:
This invention relates to a method for producing a self-supporting body comprising the steps of: (a) forming a permeable mass comprising at least one solid-phase oxidant selected from the group consisting of the halogens, sulphur and its compounds, metals, metal oxides other than the silicates, and metal nitrides other than those of boron and silicon; (b) orienting said permeable mass and a source of said parent metal relative to each other so that formation of said oxidation reaction product will occur into said permeable mass; (c) heating said source of parent metal to a temperature above the melting point of said parent metal but below the melting point of said oxidation reaction product to form a body of molten parent metal; (d) reacting said body of molten parent metal with said at least one solid-phase oxidant at said temperature to permit said oxidant at said temperature to permit said oxidation reaction product to form; and (e) maintaining at least a portion of said at least one oxidation reaction product in contact with and between said molten parent metal and said solid-phase oxidant at said temperature to progressively draw molten parent metal through said oxidation reaction product towards said solid-phase oxidant to permit fresh oxidation reaction product to continue to form at an interface between said solid-phase oxidant and previously formed oxidation reaction product that has infiltrated said permeable mass.

Removing Metal From Composite Bodies And Resulting Products

US Patent:
5350003, Sep 27, 1994
Filed:
Jul 9, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/090352
Inventors:
Birol Sonuparlak - Newark DE
William B. Johnson - Newark DE
Ali S. Fareed - Wilmington DE
Assignee:
Lanxide Technology Company, LP - Newark DE
International Classification:
B22D 1902, B22D 1914
US Classification:
164 91
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a novel process for removal of at least a portion of at least one metallic component of a metallic constituent from a multi-phase composite body. Particularly, by providing at least one of an infiltration enhancer or an infiltration enhancer precursor or an infiltrating atmosphere to be in communication with a permeable mass, which contacts at least a portion of a composite body, said metallic component of the composite body, when made molten, is caused to spontaneously infiltrate the permeable mass. Such spontaneous infiltration occurs without the requirement for the application of any pressure or vacuum. The metallic constituent is essentially leached or removed from the multi-phase body by spontaneous infiltration.
