Abstract:
Aqueous based graft emulsion copolymers comprising a polymer having a plurality of hydroxyl groups, preferably a vinyl alcohol homo- or copolymer, grafted with a polyethylene. The graft emulsion copolymer can be prepared by polymerizing ethylene and, optionally another ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in an aqueous solution of a polymer having a plurality of pendent hydroxyl groups, especially poly(vinyl alcohol). The graft emulsion copolymer product can have a polyethylene content ranging from 50 to 95 wt %, hydroxyl-containing polymer ranging from 5 to 50 wt %, and up to 45 wt % of another polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomer. Polymerization is carried out in an aqueous solution containing at least 5 wt %, preferably 10 wt %, of a hydroxyl-containing polymer having a degree of polymerization of 50 to 2200, preferably 100 to 500.

Vinyl Acetate-Ethylene Copolymer Emulsions Prepared In The Presence Of A Stabilizing System Of A Low Molecular Weight Polyvinyl Alcohol And A Surfactant

US Patent:
4921898, May 1, 1990
Filed:
Feb 17, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/015194
Inventors:
William E. Lenney - Allentown PA
John G. Iacoviello - Allentown PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
C08F 216
US Classification:
524459
Abstract:
A vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion which is about 65-70% solids and has a viscosity of less than about 3,500 is disclosed. The emulsion is prepared by copolymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of 2-4 wt %, based on vinyl acetate monomer, of a polyvinyl alcohol having a 100-600 degree of polymerization and 2-4wt %, based on vinyl acetate monomer, of a surfactant. Such emulsions demonstrate an improved speed of set as an adhesive.

Aqueous Emulsion Materials Containing Copolymerized Vinyl Amide Monomers And Hydrolysis Products Thereof

US Patent:
5591799, Jan 7, 1997
Filed:
Mar 3, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/398025
Inventors:
Richard H. Bott - Macungie PA
Michael E. Ford - Coopersburg PA
William E. Lenney - Allentown PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
C08L 3900
US Classification:
524555
Abstract:
This invention pertains to aqueous emulsions containing water insoluble, vinyl polymer particles containing polymerized N-vinyl formamide (NVF) units converted to water insoluble vinyl acetate polymers containing cationic, amine functional units. These latex dispersions are prepared by the emulsion polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and N-vinyl formamide. Preferably, vinyl acetate, optionally with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, are used to form the copolymer. The copolymer then is selectively hydrolyzed via acid hydrolysis of the N-vinyl formamide group to form water insoluble polymer particles.

Abstract:
A vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer emulsion exhibiting both partially- and fully-hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol compatibility which comprises an aqueous colloidal dispersion of a copolymer prepared by the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene in the presence of a polyvinyl alcohol stabilizing system having an 8 to 10 mole % residual vinyl acetate content, especially comprising a mixture of a polyvinyl alcohol having a 3 to 6 mole % vinyl acetate content and a polyvinyl alcohol having a 10 to 14 mole % vinyl acetate content in a ratio that yields an average residual vinyl acetate content of 8 to 10 mole %. When blended with a partially- or fully-hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol to provided an adhesive composition, such compositions demonstrate an enhanced plasticizer thickening.
