A big part of any visit with me includes education: telling my patient about their condition, what helps the condition and what makes it worse. Many times, patients have never been told what specific things they can do to help themselves. I spend a lot of time with my patients. I tend to be straightforward and get right to the point. I never want to make a patient feel bad about himself, but there are certain behaviors that can make their condition much worse, such as smoking and carrying too much weight. My patients are told very directly that they must stop smoking to help their spine heal and that losing weight will help lessen their pain.
