Method For Analyzing Solvent Extracted Sponge Core

US Patent:
4785661, Nov 22, 1988
Filed:
Apr 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/035111
Inventors:
William E. Ellington - Houston TX
Clayton L. Calkin - Houston TX
Assignee:
Shell Oil Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4900
US Classification:
73153
Abstract:
A method for quantifying the volume of oil in the fluids produced by solvent extracted sponge core distills only a portion of the solvent from the solvent/oil mixture, then determines and subtracts the remaining solvent volume to yield the actual volume of oil removed from the sponge.

Controlling Sulfide Scavenger Content Of Drilling Fluid

US Patent:
RE33349, Sep 25, 1990
Filed:
Feb 19, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/158828
Inventors:
Stephen D. Matza - Stafford TX
William E. Ellington - Houston TX
Henry C. Fleming - Houston TX
Assignee:
Shell Oil Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4400, E21B 4710, G01N 3102, G01N 3324
US Classification:
175 40
Abstract:
The concentration of unspent zinc-based hydrogen sulfide scavenger in an aqueous drilling fluid is controlled by selectively extracting the unspent scavenger in a solvent, such as glacial acetic acid, measuring the concentration of dissolved zinc, for example, with an X-ray fluorescence spectrograph, and utilizing the results of the measurements to proportion the extent of changes to be made in the concentration of the scavenger.

Nov 17, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/122622
Inventors:
Rocco DiFoggio - Houston TX
William E. Ellington - Houston TX
Kailash C. B. Dangayach - Houston TX
Assignee:
Shell Oil Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
B01D 1508
US Classification:
210656
Abstract:
The oil lost by the core sample and captured by the sponge during sponge coring is extracted from the sponge using a solvent selected from the group consisting of cycloalkanes, ethers, and freons.

Controlling Sulfide Scavenger Content Of Oil-Based Drilling Fluid

US Patent:
4805708, Feb 21, 1989
Filed:
May 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/047835
Inventors:
Stephen D. Matza - Stafford TX
William E. Ellington - Houston TX
Henry C. Fleming - Houston TX
Assignee:
Shell Oil Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01N 3102, G01N 3324
US Classification:
175 40
Abstract:
The concentration of unspent zinc-based hydrogen sulfide scavenger in an oil-based drilling fluid is controlled by selectively dissolving and extracting the unspent scavenger in a solvent, such as glacial acetic acid, separating the aqueous solution, measuring the concentration of dissolved zinc in the aqueous solution, for example, with an X-ray fluorescence spectrograph, and utilizing the results of the measurements to proportion the extent of changes in concentration of the scavenger in the drilling fluid.
