US Classification:
277 26
Abstract:
In a turbine inclusive of: a turbine shaft having a longitudinal axis, a steam pipe, a casing circumadjacent the pipe, the pipe and casing being shiftable in vertical and transverse and axial directions relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft, and a seal assembly disposed between the pipe and casing and comprising a stack of interdigitated relatively large and small piston rings, each large ring loosely fitting inside the shell during nonoperative conditions and having teeth firmly and sealingly engaging the casing during operative conditions; and having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than that of the casing for expanding at a rate faster than the expansion rate of the casing under a condition of increased temperature, each small ring loosely fitting around the pipe during nonoperative conditions and having teeth firmly and sealingly engaging the pipe during operative conditions; and having a coefficient of thermal expansion less than that of the pipe for expanding at a rate slower than the expansion rate of the pipe under a condition of increased temperature, with the large and small rings tightening upon the respective casing and pipe respectively under an increasing temperature condition and shrinking from the respective shell and pipe respectively under a decreasing temperature condition, and the teeth of the rings deforming to create a complete seal.

Spillstrip Design For Elastic Fluid Turbines

US Patent:
5547340, Aug 20, 1996
Filed:
Mar 23, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/216685
Inventors:
William S. Dalton - Chesterfield MA
Richard S. Clark - Feeding Hills MA
Kevin S. Trunkett - Springfield MA
Assignee:
IMO Industries, Inc. - Lawrenceville NJ
International Classification:
F01D 1108
US Classification:
415.001212
Abstract:
Disclosed is an improved spillstrip ring for use in forming a tip seal in an axial flow elastic fluid turbine having one or more stages. Each turbine stage has a diaphragm and a rotor. The spillstrip ring consists of an arrangement of spillstrips mounted in a circumferentially groove formed in the diaphragm. Each spillstrip includes a body portion having a longitudinal extent, a vertical extent, and a horizontal extent, and is particularly adapted for mounting in the circumferential groove in the diaphragm. At least one projection extends from the body portion substantially parallel to the vertical extent thereof, and along the longitudinal extent of the body portion. Such projection has tapered side walls which converge to a tip seal that continuously extends along the longitudinal extent of the body portion. At least one of the spillstrips has at least one narrow channel formed entirely through a portion of the vertical extent of the body portion and beneath each projection, without interrupting the tip portion continuously extending along the longitudinal extent of the body portion. During turbine operation, the channel functions to bypass oxide particles entrained in the steam flow, around the rotor blades in order to reduce the residing time of these particles between the rotor blades and diaphram nozzles, without interrupting the continuously extending tip seal.

Abstract:
A seal segment for a turbine is provided having labyrinth teeth and a brush seal disposed along the labyrinth teeth. A plurality of the segments for a seal ring. The segments are separable from each other so that the seal can retract. Each segment has two ends, each of which abuts another segment, with those ends lying along a radius (when looking down the shaft of the turbine). The brush disposed in each segment has ends that do not lie along a radius, but fit together in a tongue and groove configuration when the seal segments come together to form a seal.
