Amplitude Modulation System

US Patent:
3955155, May 4, 1976
Filed:
Dec 23, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/536003
Inventors:
William Louis Behrend - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H03C 152
US Classification:
332 1
Abstract:
An amplitude modulation system suitable for use in television broadcasting is described. A video signal amplitude modulates a radio frequency carrier signal. The amplitude modulated signal is then filtered by a delay equalized vestigial sideband filter. The delay equalized amplitude modulated signal from the output of the vestigial sideband filter is envelope detected over a first path and is amplitude limited over a second path. The amplitude limited signal is applied to first and second phase modulators. The envelope detected signal is processed by a video processor to one of the phase modulators providing a phase shift at the one phase modulator equal to the arc cosine of the normalized envelope detected signal. The envelope detected signal is also processed by a video processor to the second phase modulator to provide a phase shift at the second phase modulator equal to the minus (-) arc cosine of the normalized envelope detected signal. The outputs from the two phase modulators are combined to provide an amplified, amplitude modulated, delay equalized vestigial sideband filtered signal.

I.f. Delay Equalizer For A Uhf Tv Transmitter

US Patent:
4490693, Dec 25, 1984
Filed:
May 18, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/495723
Inventors:
William L. Behrend - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H04B 314, H03H 703
US Classification:
333 28R
Abstract:
A group delay compensation circuit for a television transmitter comprises a signal source coupled to a series resonant circuit. A means is present for changing the resonant circuit Q without changing the amplitude of an output signal derived from the resonant circuit. A difference amplifier is coupled to the resonant circuit and to the signal source. The means can be a voltage divider and a variable resistor coupled to the divider. Changing the Q varies the group delay.

Sideband Analyzer For Am Transmitters

US Patent:
4028625, Jun 7, 1977
Filed:
May 5, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/574685
Inventors:
William Louis Behrend - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H04B 102
US Classification:
325133
Abstract:
A measurement of the group delay and the amplitude response of the upper and lower sidebands of a transmitter is provided by amplitude modulating with a tone a video signal that modulates the transmitter carrier. The frequency of the video signal is changed to provide a search or coverage over the frequency bands of the upper and lower sidebands. A mixing and frequency selection are performed at the transmitter RF output to select a particular upper and lower sideband. An envelope detector demodulates the tone that is amplitude modulated on the selected sideband signal. The amplitude of this detected signal is indicative of the amplitude response and the phase of the detected signal relative to a reference phase is indicative of the group delay at the selected sideband signal.

Amplitude Modulation System

US Patent:
3956715, May 11, 1976
Filed:
Dec 23, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/536005
Inventors:
William Louis Behrend - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H03C 150, H03C 160
US Classification:
332 1
Abstract:
An amplitude modulation system suitable for use in television broadcasting is described including phase modulating means for phase modulating a carrier signal with an input signal to provide a first phase modulated signal having a phase according to the arc cosine of the amplitude of the input signal with the input signal normalized with unity at the maximum possible level thereof, the phase modulating means providing a second phase modulated signal having a phase according to the minus arc cosine of the amplitude of the input signal with the input signal normalized with unity at the maximum possible level thereof. The phase modulated output signals from the first and second modulators are processed over separate paths each including a delay equalized vestigial sideband filter. The two filtered, phase modulated signals processed over the two paths are amplified and then combined to provide an amplitude modulated, vestigial sideband filtered signal.

Amplitude And Delay Equalization Of Surface Acoustic Wave Filters In Amplitude Modulation System

US Patent:
4096454, Jun 20, 1978
Filed:
Mar 21, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/779677
Inventors:
William Louis Behrend - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H03C 106, H03C 160
US Classification:
332 37R
Abstract:
Amplitude and delay equalization of a surface acoustic wave filter used in the output of the amplitude modulated stage of a TV transmitter is disclosed. The equalization is provided by designing the filter to produce an amplitude ripple maximum or minimum at the visual carrier frequency. The video applied to the amplitude modulator is processed by a transversal equalizer such that the video is preprocessed to have an inverse amplitude and phase ripple with that produced by surface acoustic wave filter.

Linear Loading For Pwm Filter

US Patent:
4336615, Jun 22, 1982
Filed:
Oct 2, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/193023
Inventors:
Richard F. Abt - Pittsburgh PA
William L. Behrend - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
RCA Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H03G 1104, H03C 106
US Classification:
455108
Abstract:
An AM broadcast transmitter uses a PWM modulator that requires a pulse width filter. It has been found that the filter load varies over the modulation cycle resulting in distortion. To overcome this problem, a varying voltage is applied to an RF driver stage during portions of the modulation cycle.
