A cover and packaging and method for use in preventing infection in applanation tonometry eye testing. The cover has a circular transparent portion, a frustum shaped mounting portion and a frustum shaped handling flange. It is sterile, disposable, unitarily dispensable, and fits onto existing standard applanation tips. The circular transparent portion of the cover has an effective amount of a photoactive agent therein for enhancing the view of the calibration image during the pressure measurement.

A knife for ophthalmic surgery and particularly for posterior capsulotomy procedures comprises a thin, continuously curved shaft having an elongated handle attached at one end thereof. The longitudinal axis of the handle is disposed substantially tangentially to the curved shaft. A blade portion on the opposite end of the shaft terminates in a sharp tip. The shaft tapers from a relatively thick section adjacent the handle to a relatively thin section adjacent the blade portion.

An irrigation and aspiration syringe is provided for one-handed operation. A cylindrical syringe barrel has a first axial control grip projecting from the nozzle end of the syringe. An outer tubular member surrounds the syringe barrel and is connected to the rod of a plunger fitted within the syringe cartridge. A second axial control grip is affixed to the outer tubular member. Aspiration is effected by oppositely directed axial forces applied to the first and second control grips with the thumb and forefinger of one hand.

Abstract:
An intraocular lens is provided for implantation into the posterior chamber of the eye following extracapsular cataract surgery. The lens body includes a convex posterior surface having an optic area positioned in direct apposition to the posterior capsular membrance. The curvature of the posterior surface of the lens is fixed and power modifications are made by changing the curvature anterior optical surface of the lens body. The circumferential edge of the lens body is angled posteriorly to provide an annular space outside the optic area of the lens for laser or knife surgery frequently necessary after the lens implantation by extra capsular technique.
