Method Of Mounting Index Tabs Upon Stenographic Notebooks

US Patent:
4840406, Jun 20, 1989
Filed:
May 29, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/055406
Inventors:
Warren R. Pitts - Needham MA
Assignee:
Dennison Manufacturing Company - Framingham MA
International Classification:
B42D 1300, B42D 100
US Classification:
281 1
Abstract:
Two methods for mounting index tabs to coiled wire bound stenographic notebooks are disclosed. The first method involves providing one or more elongated transparent plastic envelopes having a plurality of aligned apertures adjacent a lower envelope edge, the apertures surrounding turns of the coled wire, the envelopes also having two open side portions and an upper closed envelope edge portion, and inserting index tabs through the open side portions until the tabs are contained within the envelopes. A "snap-on" version, marketed apart from the notebook, is disclosed in addition to tabs which are affixed to the coiled wire during manufacture. A second method involves providing a flat elongated base member having at least one area for recording indicia thereon, and having first and second catch members at opposite terminal portions of the base member, separated from each other by a distance slightly less than the length of the coiled wire, and reducing the length of the coiled wire by asserting pressure thereon while slipping a hook portion of the base member past the coiled wire and about a turn thereof to mount the base member upon the notebook.

Jul 11, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/629918
Inventors:
Warren R. Pitts - Needham MA
Assignee:
Dennison Manufacturing Company - Framingham MA
International Classification:
B42F 300, B42D 300
US Classification:
402 74
Abstract:
Looseleaf notebooks, report folders, and similar stationary items incorporating a deep pocket extending over the length of the item. A flexible transparent notebook of this design incorporates a pair of thermoplastic sheets which are cut to the appropriate dimensions and heat-sealed to form a pocket which is coextensive with the outer notebook cover. A ring binder support is fastened to the center of one of the plastic sheets. Such notebooks, report folders, or the like may advantageously incorporate an auxiliary pocket affixed at one of the outer edges to permit folding along this edge. The notebook may be provided with an opaque cover by inserting one or more opaque sheets within the large outer pocket.

Side Binder Notebook

US Patent:
4848948, Jul 18, 1989
Filed:
Sep 19, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/246489
Inventors:
Warren R. Pitts - Needham MA
International Classification:
B42F 304, B42F 1316
US Classification:
402 29
Abstract:
Looseleaf notebooks, presentation devices and similar stationery items incorporating a binder mechanism attached to the side of the rear cover. Three slots are present along the side of the front cover positioned so as to fit into the ring binder mechanism to lock the notebook and secure all contents. The ring binder itself may contain a stiff paper or plastic insert for providing additional support for use as a presentation device. Such insert may includes three projections along the bottom manufactured to fit into the front cover slots to convert the notebook into an easel stand. The stiff insert additionally may function as the third side during vertical positioning of the notebook thereby allowing for a stable free standing presentation device.

Inserts For Transparent Identification Tabs

US Patent:
4484401, Nov 27, 1984
Filed:
Jun 6, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/501472
Inventors:
Warren R. Pitts - Needham MA
Assignee:
Dennison Manufacturing Company - Framingham MA
International Classification:
A44C 300
US Classification:
40 2R
Abstract:
A two-sided insert for transparent identification tabs. The insert has lateral side-by-side panels. This permits collinear entry of information on the panels. The adjoining panels are then folded back to back and inserted into an identification tab holder.

Erasably, Markable Articles And Methods Of Making Such Articles

US Patent:
5037702, Aug 6, 1991
Filed:
Jun 2, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/360962
Inventors:
Warren R. Pitts - Needham MA
Peter West - Wellesley MA
Assignee:
Dennison Manufacturing Company - Framingham MA
International Classification:
B32B 2708, B32B 2710, B05D 306
US Classification:
4284237
Abstract:
An erasably markable article formed of a coated substrate that is markable with dry wipe inks without causing permanent discernible distortion of the substrate. The surface after marking is substantially fully erasable. The surface is provided by a smooth coating of cured lacquer preferably a radiation cured lacquer, for example, electron beam radiation cured urethane acrylate. The substrate may be flexible, for example, a biaxially oriented polypropylene multilayer film having a closed cell foam-like core wherein the substrate exhibits electrostatic cling properties. The substrate may also be adhesive coated paper or may be relatively inflexible pressboard.

Label Assemblies Without Die-Cutting

US Patent:
4022926, May 10, 1977
Filed:
Aug 27, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/718413
Inventors:
Allen H. Keough - Sudbury MA
Warren R. Pitts - Needham MA
Assignee:
Dennison Manufacturing Company - Framingham MA
International Classification:
B32B 310, B32B 2716
US Classification:
428 41
Abstract:
A method for making a novel assembly of laid-on labels, without die-cutting, is described. The method comprises printing over the release surface of a temporary carrier web a liquid pressure-sensitive adhesive in a predetermined pattern of discrete label areas separated by intervening areas of the carrier, solidifying the adhesive surface, forming a continuous film of radiation polymerizable liquid over each adhesive area, the film over each area being unconnected to films over adjacent areas, and exposing the films to radiation sufficient to solidify them by polymerization. Preferably the films extend over the edges of the adhesive and comprise liquids which do not wet the release surface.

Filed:
Jun 1, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/383675
Inventors:
Warren R. Pitts - Needham MA
Assignee:
Dennison Manufacturing Company - Framingham MA
International Classification:
G01D 1508
US Classification:
346163
Abstract:
Apparatus for the integral imprinting of indicia on electrosensitive substrates, including substrates subdivided into electrically discontinuous regions such as die cut labels. A negative voltage is supplied to a print electrode configured in the shape of a given character or symbol, and the print electrode is disposed over the metalized surface of an electrosensitive substrate while a grounding member contacts the surface nearby. Preferably, the printer includes a grounding member or plurality of grounding members which are arrayed to assure continuous current flow between the print and ground electrodes.
