Efficient Tubular Body Joint

US Patent:
6402414, Jun 11, 2002
Filed:
Mar 7, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/517106
Inventors:
Vinod Laxmichand Kanodia - Rochester Hills MI
Ronny B. Karlsson - Troy MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B25G 300
US Classification:
403230, 296188, 296205, 296 30, 525569, 527261
Abstract:
A frame structure includes tubular elements joined by an efficient tubular joint with internal low mass stiffening members including a central hollow box section. In the more mass efficient embodiments, the box section includes sides forming continuous extensions through the joint of all the sides of the tubular elements and all edges of each side are fixed to the connecting sides at the joint. In less efficient embodiments provided to simplify manufacturing, some of the interior edges may not be fixed to adjacent sides and/or one or more sides may be omitted from the hollow box section. All versions include extensions of at least part of the sides of each tubular element through the joint to provide mass efficient internal strengthening of the joint for use in tubular frames made with hydroformed or other tubular components.

Automated Weld Location System For Vehicles

US Patent:
6822195, Nov 23, 2004
Filed:
Apr 2, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/405987
Inventors:
Vinod L. Kanodia - Rochester Hills MI
Michael L. Dambach - Ferndale MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B23K 912
US Classification:
21912422, 219 87
Abstract:
An automatically weld locating system locates welds on a subassembly including first and second components. First and second finite element analysis models of the first and second components are retrieved. Edges of the first component are located. An outline of the first component is translated in a direction that is normal to its edge in its plane within a predetermined edge distance. A line segment of the first component is retrieved. Welds are created on the line segment with a predetermined maximum spacing and with a predetermined weld tolerance. The retrieving, determining and creating steps are repeated for additional line segments of the first component. The line segments of the second component are also processed. Welds that are within a predetermined minimum spacing are deleted.
