Portable Financial Transaction Card Capable Of Authorizing A Transaction In Foreign Currencies

US Patent:
4766293, Aug 23, 1988
Filed:
Jun 26, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/878619
Inventors:
Vincent Boston - San Mateo CA
Assignee:
VISA International Service Association - San Mateo CA
International Classification:
G06F 1530, G06F 738
US Classification:
235379
Abstract:
A transaction card is disclosed capable of authorizing a transaction in a foreign currency. The subject transaction card includes an internal microprocessor which is connected to a memory. Stored within the memory is a transaction limit associated with each account of the cardholder. Also stored in the memory are one or more rates for converting the transaction limit into foreign currencies. In operation, the cardholder will select the foreign currency which will be used for a purchase. After the selection, the processor will convert the transaction limit from a local or base currency to the selected foreign country. Thereafter, during the transaction, the processor will compare the transaction amount with the converted transaction limit to determine if an approval code should be generated. In a preferred embodiment, a key pad is provided on the transaction card to facilitate data entry. In addition, an LCD readout is provided for displaying the approval code.

Transaction System With Off-Line Risk Assessment

US Patent:
4734564, Mar 29, 1988
Filed:
May 2, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/730309
Inventors:
Vincent Boston - San Mateo CA
Elvis W. Boggan - Concord CA
Einar L. Asbo - Mill Valley CA
Assignee:
Visa International Service Association - San Mateo CA
International Classification:
G06K 500
US Classification:
235380
Abstract:
The subject invention relates to a transaction system wherein the issuer of transaction cards can regulate the type of authorization requests transmitted from the point of transaction. The system includes a plurality of transaction cards, each of which are provided with risk assessment data associated with each cardholder. The system further includes a plurality of terminals, each terminal having the ability to read the information placed on the transaction cards. In operation, the risk assessment data is compared to the transaction amount by the terminal. If the transaction is approved, the terminal will issue an automatic, off-line authorization. If the transaction does not fall within the approval range, the terminal will function to transmit the transaction information to the issuer for evaluation. The issuer can then determine whether to authorize the transaction based on its own data base.

The system further includes a plurality of terminals, each terminal having the ability to read the information placed on the transaction cards. In operation, the risk assessment data is used to generate a pending transaction limit. The amount of the transaction is compared to the pending transaction limit by the terminal. If the transaction is approved, the terminal will issue an automatic, off-line authorization. If the transaction does not fall within the approval range, the terminal will function to transmit the transaction information to the issuer for evaluation. The issuer can then determine whether to authorize the transaction based on its own data base.

Transaction Card With Magnetic Stripe Emulator

US Patent:
4701601, Oct 20, 1987
Filed:
Apr 26, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/727869
Inventors:
Joseph P. Francini - Castro Valley CA
Einar L. Asbo - Mill Valley CA
Vincent Boston - San Mateo CA
Assignee:
Visa International Service Association - San Mateo CA
International Classification:
G06K 708
US Classification:
235449
Abstract:
A transaction card is disclosed having a magnetic stripe emulator. The transaction card is adapted for use with presently available transaction terminals that include a sensor for reading a magnetic stripe. The subject card includes a transducer for generating a varying magnetic field corresponding to information typically encoded on a magnetic stripe. In operation, a microprocessor in the card extracts transaction data stored in a memory and supplies output signals to the transducer. The transducer generates a varying magnetic field corresponding to the transaction information which is read by the sensor in the transaction terminal.
