High-Energy, Broadband, Rapid Tuning Frequency Converter

US Patent:
2013002, Jan 31, 2013
Filed:
Sep 26, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/627421
Inventors:
Utah State University Research Foundation - North Logan UT, US
Robert Foltynowicz - Smithfield UT, US
Assignee:
Utah State University Research Foundation - North Logan UT
International Classification:
H01S 3/10, G01N 21/59
US Classification:
356437, 372 21, 372 5, 372 28
Abstract:
An Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) capable of rapid or broadband frequency tuning by non-mechanical or mechanical means includes a resonant cavity with one or more non-linear crystals in an optical path thereof. The non-linear crystals may be driven by actuators. A pump laser pulse is transmitted into the resonant cavity with one or more seed beams having a desired wavelength. The output beam from the resonant cavity may have the same center wavelength as the one or more seed beams which may be modulated at a frequency larger than that of the pump laser, or the inverse of the pulse duration. The OPO may be used in Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) or Differential Absorption LIDAR (DIAL) analysis by intra-pulse modulation of output to measure absorption at multiple frequencies for each pulse of a pump beam. Sum Frequency Generator configurations may be suitable for narrow and broadband UV generation.

Abstract:
A multiple optical beam folding apparatus for directing optical energy includes two or more radiation collectors configured to direct radiant energy through two or more independent optical paths to a shared focal plan array (FPA). The radiation collectors may include one or more gas cells or vacuum cells. One or more of the two or more optical paths may include a Galilean telescope. First and second reflecting surfaces are positioned in each of the two or more independent optical paths. The first reflecting surfaces are distinct reflecting surfaces from the second reflecting surfaces and the first and second reflecting surfaces are configured to direct the radiant energy of their respective independent optical paths to the FPA. The two or more second reflecting surfaces may be distinct surfaces of a pyramidal mirror.

Broadband Antenna Systems And Methods

US Patent:
2013012, May 16, 2013
Filed:
Nov 12, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/674298
Inventors:
Utah State University - North Logan UT, US
Hema Swaroop Mopidevi - Logan UT, US
Daniel Rodrigo - Barcelona, ES
Luis Jofre - Barcelona, ES
Assignee:
Utah State University - North Logan UT
International Classification:
H01Q 1/48, H01Q 21/00, H01Q 1/38
US Classification:
343846
Abstract:
A multi-band antenna that may be designed to operate well in both Public Safety (PS) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) wireless communication may employ a stepped T-shape structure in conjunction with patch tapering or a reconfigurable ground plane architecture and capacitive feeding to achieve broad bandwidth performance (e.g., over a frequency range from 220 MHz to 4900 MHz). To achieve desired performance, the antenna may include a three-dimensional structure having lateral dimensions of approximately 0.25λ in length and 0.01λ in height at a low desired frequency of operation (e.g., 426 MHz). In some embodiments, the disclosed antenna may exhibit good gain flatness and have a radiation pattern that remains substantially constant over a broad range of operating frequencies.

Thermal Pulse Flow Meter

US Patent:
2013012, May 23, 2013
Filed:
Nov 19, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/681080
Inventors:
Utah State University - North Logan UT, US
Blake Rusch - Hyde Park UT, US
David A. Bell - Farmington UT, US
Assignee:
Utah State University - North Logan UT
International Classification:
G01F 1/692
US Classification:
7320414
Abstract:
An apparatus and method are disclosed for using a thermally active device as a flow meter. The flow meter may have an extremely low mass, rapid response time, and use minimal energy. The flow meter may be located near a flow-side surface of a conduit wall, flush with the surface of a wall, or within a boundary layer of a flow in a conduit. In these locations, the device may present virtually no obstruction to the flow. In certain embodiments, the device may use a resistance temperature device (RTD) heated by a known current, and then tested for resistance at a comparatively much lower (nominally zero) value. A flow rate may be calculated as a function of temperature measurements taken at different steady-state conditions. Flow rates may be so measured at any desired frequency, including very infrequently, such as seconds, minutes, or days apart.

Reconfigurable Antennas Utilizing Parasitic Pixel Layers

US Patent:
2013017, Jul 11, 2013
Filed:
Oct 17, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/654209
Inventors:
Utah State University - North Logan UT, US
Daniel Rodrigo - Montcada, ES
Luis Jofre - Barcelona, ES
Assignee:
Utah State University - North Logan UT
International Classification:
H01Q 19/00
US Classification:
343700MS
Abstract:
Reconfigurable antennas utilizing parasitic layers are disclosed herein. In certain embodiments, a reconfigurable antenna may include an active driven antenna element. The active driven antenna may be a patch antenna element. A parasitic element may be disposed over the active antenna element and be configured to couple with electromagnetic energy emitted from the active antenna element via electromagnetic mutual coupling. The parasitic element may include an array of selectively reconfigurable pixels interconnected via microelectromechanical switches. By selectively reconfiguring the geometry of the array, the reconfigurable antenna may be configured to operate in multiple operating modes.

Switch Wear Leveling

US Patent:
2013018, Jul 25, 2013
Filed:
Jan 23, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/748074
Inventors:
Utah State University - North Logan UT, US
Kylee Sealy - Logan UT, US
Aaron Gilchrist - Logan UT, US
Assignee:
UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY - North Logan UT
International Classification:
H02M 3/335
US Classification:
363 17
Abstract:
An apparatus for switch wear leveling includes a switching module that controls switching for two or more pairs of switches in a switching power converter. The switching module controls switches based on a duty cycle control technique and closes and opens each switch in a switching sequence. The pairs of switches connect to a positive and negative terminal of a DC voltage source. For a first switching sequence a first switch of a pair of switches has a higher switching power loss than a second switch of the pair of switches. The apparatus includes a switch rotation module that changes the switching sequence of the two or more pairs of switches from the first switching sequence to a second switching sequence. The second switch of a pair of switches has a higher switching power loss than the first switch of the pair of switches during the second switching sequence.
