Inventors:
University of Utah Research Foundation - Salt Lake City UT, US
Ye Zhang - Salt Lake City UT, US
Rujie Sun - Salt Lake City UT, US
Assignee:
University of Utah Research Foundation - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
H01L 31/0352, H01L 33/06
US Classification:
257 28, 257E33005, 257E31037
Abstract:
An electrical device comprising (A) a substrate having a surface and (B) a nanohole superlattice superimposed on a portion of the surface is provided. The nanohole superlattice comprises a plurality of sheets having an array of holes defined therein. The array of holes is characterized by a band gap or band gap range. The plurality of sheets forms a first edge and a second edge. A first lead comprising a first electrically conductive material forms a first junction with the first edge. A second lead comprising a second electrically conductive material forms a second junction with the second edge. The first junction is a Schottky barrier with respect to a carrier. In some instances a metal protective coating covers all or a portion of a surface of the first lead. In some instances, the first lead comprises titanium, the second lead comprises palladium, and the metal protective coating comprises gold.

Electrochemical Flow Cytometry

US Patent:
2013013, May 23, 2013
Filed:
Jan 11, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/739800
Inventors:
University of Utah Research Foundation - Salt Lake City UT, US
Richard Rabbitt - Salt Lake City UT, US
Assignee:
University of Utah Research Foundation - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
C12Q 1/02
US Classification:
435 29
Abstract:
A method for triggering cellular exocytosis events and measuring quantal release of electroactive chemicals is disclosed. A method can include flowing a cell through a single cell channel having a pair of electrodes oriented to direct current through the cell at a stimulation location along the single cell channel. The pair of electrodes include a working electrode, a counter electrode and an optional reference electrode. The single cell channel has dimensions which provide direct contact of the cell with walls of the single cell channel sufficient to substantially reduce or eliminate shunt paths around the cell at the stimulation location. The cell can be exposed to an electric field at the stimulation location using the pair of electrodes sufficient to trigger exocytosis. Changes in current due to exocytosis processes appear as spikes that can be correlated with a quanta of the electroactive chemicals which are released during exocytosis.

Methods For Assessing Risk For Cardiac Dysrythmia In A Human Subject

US Patent:
2013016, Jun 27, 2013
Filed:
Sep 17, 2012
Appl. No.:

Inventors:
University of Utah - Salt Lake City UT, US
University of Utah Research Foundation - Salt Lake City UT, US
Assignee:
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH RESEARCH FOUNDATION - Salt Lake City UT
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH - Salt Lake City UT
International Classification:
C12Q 1/68
US Classification:
435 611, 435 612, 435 792, 436501
Abstract:
The present invention relates to methods for assessing the risk of a patient for developing a potentially fatal cardiac dysrhythmia and for diagnosing Andersen's Syndrome. A tissue sample from a patient is obtained and the DNA or proteins of the sample isolated. From the DNA and protein isolates the sequence of the KCNJ2 gene or the Kir2.1 polypeptide can be obtained. The KCNJ2 gene or the Kir2.1 can be screened for alteration as compared to the wile-type sequence. An alteration in a copy of the KCNJ2 gene or a Kir2.1 polypeptide indicates that the patient has a high risk for developing a cardiac dysrhythmia and can be diagnosed with Andersen's Syndrome. The invention also related to isolated nucleic acid molecules with one or more alterations as compared to the wild-type sequence.
