As a Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, I believe we have a clear obligation to provide patients with as much information about their care as we can. Informed patients simply make better decisions about treatment options. I also have a healthy respect for surgery, and I am of the opinion that it should be avoided if possible. However, if your symptoms require surgery, it should be done in a way that preserves uninvolved structures as much as possible - i.e., minimally invasive.
