Abstract:
An apparatus and method are provided for multimedia communications with multiple network functionality, such as conflict resolution for multiple simultaneous communication sessions involving separate and independent networks and call types, such as video and voice. The apparatus includes a first network interface, such as a cable interface (120), an ISDN interface (125) or a telephony interface (130), with the first network interface coupleable to a first network for communication of a first network signal; a second network interface, the second network interface coupleable to a second network for communication of a second network signal; a user interface such as a user/audio interface (135) for reception of a plurality of control signals; and a processor arrangement (143) responsive through a set of program instructions, when operably coupled, to determine a presence of a first network communication session, to further determine an occurrence of the second network signal, and upon the occurrence of the second network signal during the first network communication session, to provide a distinctive alert to the user interface during the first network communication session indicating the occurrence of the second network signal.

A control unit (102) efficiently decodes burst signal transmissions in a TDMA-based telecommunication system (100) by decimating down the number of samples requiring processing during symbol detection. The control unit (102) includes a sampling receiver (304) that inputs burst signals from cable access units, converts them to a pair of baseband quadrature signals, I and Q. The sampling receiver (304) also includes an A/D converter (314) that samples the I and Q signals at preferably four times the symbol rate. A digital signal processor circuit (306) produces a timing error signal for substantially all of the samples. A method and apparatus in a communication system (100) for allocating and controlling data transmissions to and from communications unit (134) in communications system (100). The communication systems (100) includes a cable distribution network (106) with a base communications unit (102) and a number of downstream communications units (134) all connected to the cable distribution network (106). A plurality of channels are used to transmit data transmissions between the base communications unit (100) and the downstream communications unit (134). A method and apparatus in a communications system (100) for providing communications units (134) access to the communications system (100). The communications system (100) includes a cable distribution network (106) with a base communications unit (102) and a number of downstream communications units (134) all connected to the cable distribution network (106). A method for synchronizing timing of signal transmissions in a telecommunication system (100) determines a "fixed portion" (222) of the propagation delay between the central unit (102) and subscribers (206, 208) in a particular node (202). Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for controlling power consumption and access to telephone channels (36) in a cable telephony system (10). The system (10) has two subsystems for limiting power and access, one, when a telephone (40) is waiting to receive a call and a second when a subscriber wants to place a call. The telephone (40) is usually waiting for a telephone call. The first subsystem reduces power consumption by having a transceiver (114) for the telephone (40) only monitor for incoming calls periodically and turns off the transceiver (114) when not monitoring for calls. The second subsystem, limits system power consumption and access to channels (36) by only allowing loop current and access to channels (36) when a channel (36) is available for use. These two subsystems reduce the system power consumption and regulate the access to the telephone channels (36).

Abstract:
A telephony system having automatic timing adjustment for diverse routing of HFC systems has a signal stream routing through a signal line loop between a head-end and at least one communication unit. If a fault occurs within the signal line loop, recognized by the head-end when a short uplink burst from the communication unit does not align within a predetermined timing window, the head-end will cycle through predetermined delay parameters corresponding to various alternate signal line loops made up of redundant signal lines. Once the predetermined delay parameter corresponding to the current alternate signal line loop is determined, normal operation of the system resumes.
