D/A Conversion Apparatus Including Electrooptical Multipliers

D/A Conversion Apparatus Including Electrooptical Multipliers

US Patent:
4613204, Sep 23, 1986
Filed:
Nov 25, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/555242
Inventors:
Carl M. Verber - Columbus OH
Thomas B. Smith - Columbus OH
Philip M. Dunson - Columbus OH
Assignee:
Battelle Memorial Institute - Columbus OH
International Classification:
G02B 610, G05B 1508, H03M 100
US Classification:
350 9614
Abstract:
Apparatus (FIG. 1) receives electrical input potentials (11A-11D) representing components, e. g. coefficients (zero or one), of weighted digital input data, and provides analog optical output (12) proportional to the sum of the weighted digital values in the input data. An electrooptic waveguide (13) has four adjacent electrooptic diffractive means (14A-14D), each responsive to a separate component of the digital input data and comprising a first electrode (15A-15D) and a second electrode (16A-16D) on the waveguide (13) for temporarily changing the index of refraction when different electrical potentials are present thereon, and thus forming a Bragg grating therein with a direction of Bragg incidence in the same input direction (17) and a direction of Bragg diffraction in the same output direction (18). A coupling prism (21) directs light from a laser (20) to enter into each diffractive means (14A-14D) in the input direction (17). Binary digital circuitry (24) provides, via voltage dividers (25A- 25D), an electrical potential (at 27A-27D, 26) to each electrode (15A, etc.

Laminated Fabric Having Integral Raised Areas Formed Therein And Method Of Making Same

Laminated Fabric Having Integral Raised Areas Formed Therein And Method Of Making Same

US Patent:
4400422, Aug 23, 1983
Filed:
Jul 19, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/399765
Inventors:
Thomas L. Smith - Columbus OH
Assignee:
Colamco, Inc. - Columbus OH
International Classification:
B32B 312
US Classification:
428160
Abstract:
A laminated fabric having an integral raised area formed therein which simulates the appearance of a button, welt or the like, and method of making same. The laminated fabric is comprised of a layer of cloth or vinyl cover material, an intermediate layer of foam and a layer of backing material such as nylon. A form having the shape which corresponds to the desired shape of the raised area is disposed between the foam layer and the cover material. Anhydrous polyurethane foam forming materials are applied in liquid form to the form layer and cover material contact surface and the form layer and backing material contact surface. The unlaminated layers are placed over a die with each of the forms being positioned immediately above a die having protrusions which generally circumscribe the form. Moisture is introduced into the foam forming material and a heated press is applied to the backing material forcing the unlaminated layers down against the die. The resultant heat and pressure cause a foaming reaction of the foam forming materials which results in a foam bonding layer which bonds the cover material in substantial contact with the backing material in the region surrounding the form.

High Pressure Compaction For Pharmaceutical Formulations

High Pressure Compaction For Pharmaceutical Formulations

US Patent:
2007021, Sep 20, 2007
Filed:
Dec 22, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/538991
Inventors:
Thomas Smith - Columbus OH, US
Gene Gauzer - Kirkland, CA
International Classification:
A61K 9/14
US Classification:
424489000
Abstract:
Methods for producing a pharmaceutical preparation of pressure-fused particles including an active pharmaceutical ingredient are disclosed. The methods include the application of a pressure of between 0.1 GPa and 10 GPa to produce a compacted sample. The pressure-fused particles of the invention are useful for parenteral administration, and particularly sustained-release formulations, due to dissolution kinetics which are superior to conventional crystalline or amorphous packed powder preparations of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Pharmaceutical preparations including such pressure-fused microparticles are also disclosed.
