Steering And Ground Speed Control Mechanism Of A Dual-Path Hydrostatic Drive System

US Patent:
6523635, Feb 25, 2003
Filed:
Nov 2, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/432680
Inventors:
Robert James Johnston - Oskaloosa IA
Thomas Daryl Bebernes - Ottumwa IA
Assignee:
Deere Company - Moline IL
International Classification:
B60K 1700
US Classification:
180307, 180 648, 74496
Abstract:
A vehicle has a pair of opposite drive wheels driven by a dual path hydrostatic transmission. Steering and speed/direction controls are effected by changing the displacement and/or direction of fluid flow through the pair of reversible, variable displacement pumps that are respectively coupled to fixed displacement ground wheel drive motors. The control mechanism for accomplishing steering and/or speed/direction control includes a steering rack that is caused to pivot about a fixed post in response to steering wheel movement. A first crank arm is coupled for pivoting in concert with the rack and a second crank arm is coupled for pivoting in concert with a pivot plate about a second axis, the pivot plate having a pair of connection points respectively coupled to control arms of the pair of pumps by a pair of pump control rods. The pivotal motion of the steering rack is transmitted to the pivot plate by a tie-rod coupled between the first and second crank arms. This tie-rod is parallel to a pivot support bar that swings about the fixed post in response to fore-and-aft movement of a speed/direction control lever, the pivot plate being pivotally mounted to the free end of the pivot support bar.

Steering And Ground Speed Control Mechanism Of A Dual-Path Hydrostatic Drive System

US Patent:
5649606, Jul 22, 1997
Filed:
May 26, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/451818
Inventors:
Thomas Daryl Bebernes - Ottumwa IA
Robert James Johnston - Oskaloosa IA
Assignee:
Deere & Company - Moline IL
International Classification:
B60K 1700
US Classification:
180307
Abstract:
A steering and ground speed control mechanism of a vehicle equipped with a dual-path hydrostatic drive system includes a pivot plate fixed to a vertical pivot post at a location between and equidistant from a pair of locations respectively linked to a pair of pump displacement control arms of a pair of pumps respectively coupled for delivering fluid to right- and left-hand drive motors coupled to right- and left-hand ground wheels. A train of elements for transferring steering inputs from a steering wheel to the pivot plate includes a timed belt and sprocket set with one of the sprockets being fixed to the pivot post and the other mounted to a fixed post together with a quadrant-shaped steering rack for pivotal movement about the fixed post in concert with the rack. Pivoting the pivot plate in opposite directions from a centered position causes different displacements of the pumps and, hence, in the two drive motors being driven at different speeds. A train of elements for transferring speed inputs from a speed control lever to shift the pivot plate back and forth in a nearly straight path includes a push-pull cable coupled between the lever and an arm having the pivot post pivotally mounted in one end thereof, with the arm being mounted for pivoting about the fixed post exclusive of the rack and sprocket.

Aug 9, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/695360
Inventors:
Melvin William Keller - Ottumwa IA
David Henry Diebold - Ottumwa IA
Steven Lawrence Schmid - Agency IA
Stanley Paul Wellman - Ottumwa IA
Frederick Carl Krambeck - Ottumwa IA
Thomas Daryl Bebernes - Ottumwa IA
Assignee:
Deere & Company - Moline IL
International Classification:
A01D 6906
US Classification:
56 112
Abstract:
A self-propelled windrower is provided with a platform including a reel which sweeps crop to be cut over a sickle cutterbar and into the nip of a pair of counter-rotating center-feed augers that, in turn, deliver the crop to the nip of a pair of counter-rotating conditioner rolls; and these driven components may be reversed to disgorge slugs of crop. The reversible drive includes a hydraulic pump carried by the traction unit and coupled to a motor carried by the platform. The hydraulic motor on the platform is coupled to power a main gear box which distributes power to the driven components of the platform. Operation of the pump is electro-hydraulically controlled with a single switch being operable to effect forward operation of the platform drive train, and with a second switch being designed to be moved and held in place to effect and maintain the drive train in reverse. Both switches cannot be operated at the same time, however the machine can be reversed with the platform lowered, fully raised, or anywhere in between.

Low Pressure Warning For Hydraulic System Of Platform Float Suspension

US Patent:
5633452, May 27, 1997
Filed:
Mar 29, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/624286
Inventors:
Thomas D. Bebernes - Ottumwa IA
Assignee:
Deere & Company - Moline IL
International Classification:
G01M 300, A01D 3428
US Classification:
73 37
Abstract:
An agricultural implement includes a header or platform suspended from a main frame by a suspension permitting movement of the header between a lowered working position and a raised transport position. The suspension includes single-acting float cylinders and a single-acting lift cylinder controlled by an electrohydraulic control system including a programmable microprocessor in which a signal representative of a minimum acceptable float pressure may be set. The microprocessor contains an electronic switch that couples a warning device lead to ground to effect energization of the warning device in response to the microprocessor receiving an electronic signal representative of a float circuit pressure below the minimum acceptable float pressure. In one embodiment, the microprocessor contains a timing device which is triggered whenever a control switch is connected to energize a "lower" signal lead the timing device being set to time out when sufficient time has elapsed to ensure that the header has reached its working position. The timing device works to suppress the signal representative of the float circuit pressure so that a premature energization of the warning device does not occur when a low float pressure is due to the header being elevated from the ground.
