Abstract:
Disclosed is a method to safely terminate a runaway reaction within a reaction vessel, comprising: sensing an increase in pressure in the reaction vessel, opening a barrier blocking a flow path into the reactor, wherein the barrier opening is achieved via a mechanical response to the sensed increase in pressure, and injecting a kill agent into the reaction vessel via the opened flow path, thereby terminating the reaction. Also disclosed is a system for performing the method. The system functions without an external electrical source and is therefore compliant with ASME standards.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a reactor or sparging vessel suitable for use for reaction mixtures containing vapor and/or gas bubbles. It comprises a mechanical agitation means suitable to redistribute flow radially and at least one perforated plate suitable to provide resistance to axial flow. In desirable embodiments it may include at least one electrically or hydraulically-stimulated rotatable shaft upon which at least one blade impeller is mounted, and at least one perforated plate oriented such that it provides resistance to axial flow. The perforated plate may have channels therethrough whose cross-sectional dimension is smaller than the projected average diameter of the vapor and/or gas bubbles. The reactor or sparging vessel offers improved flow dynamics, including reduced back mixing and narrowed residence time distribution. A method of employing the reactor for a reaction mixture containing vapor and/or gas bubbles is also disclosed. An impeller blade having two curvatures is also disclosed.

A continuous process for producing high impact polystyrene comprising feeding at least one vinyl aromatic monomer, an elastomer, and a free radical initiator to a first linear flow reactor to form a reaction mixture, polymerizing the reaction mixture in said linear flow reactor to at least the phase inversion point of the mixture, and feeding the reaction mixture from the first linear flow reactor to a second reactor for post-inversion polymerization of the mixture. A method of producing an elastomer-reinforced polymer comprising inverting a reaction mixture comprising at least one vinyl aromatic monomer, an elastomer, and a free radical initiator in a plug flow reactor. Abstract:
Disclosed is a process for preparing a polymer. The process includes at least one process stream and the process stream has at least one characteristic of interest. The process further includes passing the process stream past a sensor probe connected to a near-IR spectrophotometer and passing light from a light source through the probe and into the spectrometer wherein the light source, spectrometer and sensor probe are connected by a fiber optic cable. The effect of the interaction of the process stream and the light passing through the senor probe is measured and used to define a value for the characteristic of interest. The value for the characteristic of interest is a component of an algorithm and the algorithm is used, in real time, to monitor, control, or monitor and control the process for preparing a polymer.
