Variable-Speed Planetary Transmission

US Patent:
4090415, May 23, 1978
Filed:
Jul 6, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/702547
Inventors:
James M. Gorrell - Morton IL
Terry R. Collins - Lewistown IL
Willis E. Windish - Pekin IL
Assignee:
Caterpillar Tractor Co. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
B60K 4118
US Classification:
74769
Abstract:
In a dual transmission system, the front transmission has a three-speed gearbox with a low, intermediate and a 1:1 input-to-output speed ratio coupled to a three-speed range unit to provide seven usable forward speeds. A converter lock-up clutch is used to provide direct mechanical drive in the upper six gears. The rear transmission has an identical three-speed range unit. An additional gear train is added to the rear transmission to provide four speeds. The additional very low speed is used in conjunction with the lowest speed of the front seven-speed transmission. Both transmissions are operated in torque converter drive in first gear only. When any of the speed ranges of the front range unit is used in conjunction with the low or intermediate input-to-output speed ratio of the front gearbox the same speed range of the rear transmission is coupled by a torque converter to the rear engine. When any of the speed ranges of the front range unit is used in conjunction with the 1:1 speed ratio of the front gearbox, the same speed range of the rear range unit is coupled directly and mechanically to the rear engine.

Brake Mechanism With Spring Applied Fluid Pressure Released Assembly

US Patent:
4057297, Nov 8, 1977
Filed:
Jun 28, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/700242
Inventors:
Henry E. Beck - Oswego IL
Terry R. Collins - Lewistown IL
International Classification:
B60T 1322
US Classification:
303 71
Abstract:
A brake mechanism includes a body and a piston movable relative thereto in braking and brake-releasing directions. A spring is disposed within a chamber defined by the body and piston to urge the piston in a brake-applying direction, and pressurized air may be selectively directed to such chamber to the piston in a brake-applying direction.
