The most important determination of how I treat my patients is to respect them as I would my own family. Many of the surgical decisions and care decisions I make are discussed with these patients as if they were personal acquaintances or relatives. The second most important issue I choose in evaluating the care of a patient is whether or not someone else could do it better. I am always willing to send patients to institutions which might have more experience or different alternatives, and always request that a patient exercise his right to a second opinion if there is any doubt about proceeding with our suggested course. In discussing the issues of care, we must all be aware of the expertise which all in my program have achieved. We are capable of performing virtually the entire spectrum of cardiac and vascular thoracic surgery with all the up-to-date technology. When my experience and position as Director is combined with the expert personnel in our team, we are able to keep our results high, our complications low and our hospital stays short. This results in a very satisfied patient who feels that their care has been compassionate, expert and will provide the best results possible.
