System For Initiating Communication Between A User Interface And A Vision Processor

US Patent:
2012004, Feb 16, 2012
Filed:
Oct 19, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/277024
Inventors:
Steven Olson - Portland OR, US
Steven Webster - Tigard OR, US
Jordan Holt - Portland OR, US
John McGarry - La Jolla CA, US
Assignee:
COGNEX CORPORATION - Natick MA
International Classification:
G06F 3/01, G06F 15/16
US Classification:
715733
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for instructing a user interface (UI) in communication with a first of vision processor (VP) to establish communication with a second (VP). The invention is useful in a machine vision system having a plurality of VPs and at least one UI. The method includes the steps of providing each VP with a link function for establishing communication between a VP and a UI; and activating the link function so as to issue instructions to the UI to establish communication with another VP. The link function enables local dynamic display of a remote VP on the UI, and a dynamic connection that provides a continually updated display representing a current state of the VP connected to the UI. An operator may observe results and alter parameters on any of the VPs in the system without having to first understand the architecture of the machine vision system.

Method And Apparatus For Interleaving A Parallel Image Processing Memory

US Patent:
6157751, Dec 5, 2000
Filed:
Dec 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
9/000906
Inventors:
Steven J. Olson - Portland OR
Robert C. Hinz - West Linn OR
Kurt M. Anderson - Molalla OR
Assignee:
Cognex Corporation - Natick MA
International Classification:
G06K 954
US Classification:
382304
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for accessing image pixel data in a plurality of parallel random access memories (RAMs) includes providing the RAMs so that they are arranged in pairs that each include an even RAM and an odd RAM. Each of the pairs includes an identical copy of the image pixel data stored at identical addresses in each of the RAMs relative to each other. An image processor receives image pixel data from the RAMs over multi-bit data lines. and addresses rows and columns of the pairs so that alternating columns of image pixel data corresponding to alternating pixel columns in an acquired image are stored in an alternating manner in each of an even RAM and an odd RAM. In other words, pixel data of alternating odd pixel columns are stored in succeeding columns in the odd RAM and pixel data of all even pixel columns are stored in succeeding columns in the even RAM.

Method And Apparatus For Parallel Addressing Of An Image Processing Memory

US Patent:
5982395, Nov 9, 1999
Filed:
Dec 31, 1997
Appl. No.:
9/002055
Inventors:
Steven J. Olson - Portland OR
Robert C. Hinz - West Linn OR
Kurt M. Anderson - Molalla OR
Assignee:
Cognex Corporation - Natick MA
International Classification:
G09G 536
US Classification:
345515
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for addressing a parallel image processing memory provides a plurality of random access memories arranged in an array in a set of array rows and array columns. Each of the memories has addresses for storing image pixel data that are arranged identically to each other. Each of the random access memories stores the group of image pixel data at the identical addresses. The entire group of image pixel data is stored in each of the plurality of random access memories. The random access memories can be constructed from a plurality of individual random access memory structures that are joined as a single memory storage unit, or buffer that enables one image pixel data to be addressed in each addressing cycle. An image processor generates address values for accessing the group of image pixel data over a plurality of address lines interconnected with respective of the plurality of buffers. The image processor manipulates the group of image pixel data.

Apparatus And Method For Controllably Retrieving And/Or Filtering Content From The World Wide Web With A Profile Based Search Engine

US Patent:
2001005, Dec 20, 2001
Filed:
Jan 24, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/768056
Inventors:
Steven Olson - Portland OR, US
International Classification:
G06F007/00
US Classification:
709/001000, 707/001000
Abstract:
A method of controllably retrieving information from the World Wide Web or from a given database in cooperation with a user's composite profile, comprising the steps of: (a) prompting a user to respond to at least one profile query; (b) generating a composite user profile from response(s) to said at least one query; (c) generating at least one portal having one or more records of information from a central repository; (d) matching said composite user profile with said at least one portal; (e) entering at least one search or retrieval instruction; and (f) controllably retrieving one or more records of information from said at least one matched portal in response to said at least one search instruction.

Configuration Of A Machine Vision System Over A Network

US Patent:
2002018, Dec 5, 2002
Filed:
Jun 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/872934
Inventors:
Steven Olson - Portland OR, US
John McGarry - Tigard OR, US
International Classification:
G06F015/177
US Classification:
709/220000
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for configuring a machine vision system over a network, wherein the machine vision system includes a heterogeneous set of vision processors (VPs), and at least one host having a user interface (UI). The method includes the steps of sending VP characteristic information over the network from a VP to a host having a UI; and using the UI to configure the VP via the network. Thus, it is no longer necessary to match a UI with the VP it will connect with, which simplifies installation, configuration, and extension of multiple VP vision systems. The invention also enables a single UI to connect to and configure VPs with substantially different I/O support, communications protocols, and vision functionality.
