I believe that physicians and the people they treat should work together as a team with the mutual goal of promoting health and relieving suffering. This means that you and I share responsibility for your treatment. You are the most important person in this team, and ultimately you will make all of the important decisions. It is a critical part of my job to make certain that you understand the reasons for my recommendations. I will provide you with the information, experience, and insights I have accumulated through the practice of neurosurgery. I want to be sure that you understand the nature of your diagnosis and the reasons for the diagnostic or treatment alternatives which I suggest. I am very conservative with regard to treatment options. I believe that surgery should always be considered as a "last resort". Before offering surgical treatment I always try to confirm that the reasonable non-surgical treatments have been tried. In unusual cases I will recommend early or urgent surgery; especially those cases that I feel would result in neurologic impairment if surgery is delayed. These cases usually involve progressive neurologic deficits, tumors, or situations in which ordinary activities of daily living become dangerous due to the nature of the disease.
