Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to advantageous devices and methods for treating patients suffering from renal insufficiency and/or hepatic insufficiency. More particularly, the invention relates in certain aspects to devices and methods for performing continuous flow-through peritoneal dialysis (CFPD). In other aspects of the invention, peritoneal dialysis systems are provided which utilizes a bioreactor to regenerate peritoneal fluid for re-infusion into a peritoneal cavity. The invention, therefore, provides advantageous systems for passing fluid through a patients peritoneal cavity at a relatively high flow rate, while maintaining in the peritoneal cavity an optimal dialysate pressure, to thereby alter the contents of the patients blood by diffusion of molecules through the peritoneal membrane.

Abstract:
Caloric counting method and apparatus comprises a base support structure, a plate support structure pivotally mounted on the base support structure, and scale means connected to said plate support structure at a point remote from the pivot line thereof. A plate carrying a combination of food components constituting an entire meal is positioned on the plate support structure to determine the total caloric content of the entire meal. The plate is provided with indicia defining different zones on the plate for foods having different calories per gram, these zones being arranged so that the zone corresponding to foods having the least calories per gram is positioned nearest the pivotal mounting of the plate support structure when the plate is positioned thereon. The patient places the food components constituting an entire meal in the correct zones on the plate and the total caloric content of the entire meal is determined in a single operation by reading the scale which is calibrated in calories.

Abstract:
The invention relates to methods and compositions for delivering iron to an iron-deficient patient, more particularly, to methods whereby an iron complex comprising divalent or trivalent ionic iron complexed with one or more low molecular weight anions is administered to a patient by transfer from dialysate. A complex selected according to the invention is non-polymeric; soluble in an aqueous medium; chemically stable, thereby preventing the dissociation of iron ions from the anions under conditions according to the invention; and can be well absorbed into blood and the living body. Also provided are dialysate compositions including therein an iron complex selected according to the invention, and dialysate concentrates which may be diluted to yield an inventive dialysate composition.

Abstract:
A method and device for long term monitoring of the blood level of various blood constituents. The monitoring is accomplished by capillary filtration and collection of an ultrafiltrate of blood. Filtration of the ultrafiltrate occurs through a filter composed of hollow fibers which are implanted within an interstitial body space in fluid communication with blood capillaries. The ultrafiltrate is drawn through the filter and into an ultrafiltrate collector which extends externally of the body. The collector provides a vacuum for withdrawing the ultrafiltrate and holds discrete liquid samples of the ultrafiltrate. The method and device is particularly suited for long term monitoring of blood glucose levels in diabetic patients or other blood chemical constituents in other patients.

Abstract:
In general, this application is directed to medical devices that exhibit antimicrobial activity and to methods for preparing and using the medical devices. The medical devices of the present application include a polymeric portion that has been impregnated with a paraben and an organic dye in a manner whereby the paraben and organic dye exhibiting antibacterial properties. In one form, the paraben is impregnated into the polymeric portion before impregnation thereof with the organic dye. In another form, it is contemplated that the polymeric material may include methyl paraben, propyl paraben, and methylene blue. It is further contemplated that the polymeric material is effective in releasing at least one of the paraben and organic dye to prohibit bacterial growth in surrounding tissue and/or fluid.

The instant method involves intermittently infusing saline boluses into a patient's bloodstream during dialysis, and monitoring how long it takes for the bolus to complete a full circuit through the body. The concentrations versus time of one of more return flows as a result of the injected bolus are measured including a peak resulting from a fast circuit path, a peak resulting from a slow circuit path, and an average of the two aforementioned peaks. These parameters can be monitored over time in response to the injection of a plurality of boluses and their values over time used to determine the condition of the patient. Because of the rules governing abstracts, this abstract should not be used to construe the claims.
