Method And Apparatus For Fractional-N Synthesis

US Patent:
7231196, Jun 12, 2007
Filed:
Dec 12, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/015993
Inventors:
Hung-Ming Chien - Los Angeles CA, US
Meng-An Pan - Cerritos CA, US
Stephen Wu - Los Angeles CA, US
Brima Ibrahim - Los Angeles CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H04B 7/00, H04B 1/18
US Classification:
455260, 4551651
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for fractional-N synthesis includes processing that begins by generating a 1feedback frequency from the output frequency based on a fixed divider value. The processing continues by generating a 2feedback frequency from the output frequency based on a selectable divider value, a modified fractional value of the divider value, and a modified integer value of the divider value. The processing continues by determining whether the fractional value of the divider value is within a range of fractional values. If so, the 1feedback frequency is used to produce the output. If the fractional portion of the divider value is not within the range of fractional values, the 2feedback frequency is used to produce the output frequency.
