Staff Sergeant Stephen B. Mathews distinguished himself by meritorious service as Supervisor, Infrastructure Systems, 744th Communications Squadron, 844th Communications Group, Bolling Air Force Base, District of Columbia. During this period, Sergeant Mathews’ technical prowess proved invaluable as he expertly installed 98 thousand dollars in network infrastructure upgrades. This enhanced capability increased network reliability for 3,000 users and directly aided in the relocation of 12 offices that were part of the Department of Defense Base Realignment and Closure initiative. Additionally, Sergeant Mathews anchored a 1.2 million dollar Bolling Air Force base network segment upgrade. He keenly engineered a technical solution and installed 80 switching devices extending state-of-the-art high speed intranet technology to 3,000 users. Finally, while deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Sergeant Mathews remotely installed 351 computer security patches. His timely actions significantly increased network security for 1,000 computer systems and eliminated a three year remote access problem. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Mathews reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
